The scandal involving Dianna Russini and New England Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has been rehashed from all angles throughout the NFL offseason due to the ethical concerns it has raised. Despite Russini’s resignation from her post at The Athletic in April, Vrabel only missed the third day of the 2026 NFL Draft before going back to work.
Analyst Pessimistic Over Dianna Russini’s Journalistic Future
After additional details about Russini’s conduct at The Athletic during her relationship with Vrabel were revealed in a lengthy article published by The New York Times, the former NFL insider’s future looks bleak.
PFSN analyst Terry Biggs was pessimistic about Russini’s re-entry into the world of reporting, where she had cultivated a reputation for her unimpeachable sources and accurate breaking news.
“Russini will find a home at Barstool or Dan Le Batard’s show. She will conduct a teary interview. However, her reputation inside the league is shot. She may become an NFL commentator, but this scandal is now her entire legacy,” Biggs said.
After the revelation of her relationship with Vrabel, fans and analysts have questioned the origin of several stories broken by Russini over the years.

The New York Times article published on Wednesday revealed that Russini’s contract, expiring in June, was up for renewal. In addition, the report stated that the former NFL insider earned a mammoth $800,000 salary annually.
During this week’s segment of the “Stillman & Company” show, analyst Jared Stillman was not impressed by Russini’s salary vis-à-vis other industry insiders, who were paid significantly more than the former The Athletic reporter.

“The value of the insider is to have somebody perpetuate the rumor cycle so that shows like this one, and all of the shows on ESPN, and all of the others can run with it,” Stillman said. “Let’s say one of these insiders who has the credibility — Rapoport, Schefter, Russini, Breer, Pelissero — let’s say one of them puts out there that Joe Burrow is unhappy with the Bengals, may look for a trade at the end of the year. That’s gonna blow up.”
“Every show is gonna talk about it,” he continued. “Every team, every city, what does our team need to do to get Joe Burrow? It’s all about the clicks and the recognition and everything else.”
“It’s a dirty game, it is what it is,” Stillman added. “But you have to break the news at some point for people to think you have the credibility that you can also spread gossip. I say all of that because, again, I think those guys make millions. I think Schefter makes $9 million dollars a year. If Schefter’s making $9 million, and Rapoport’s making in the millions, and all of these guys are in the millions, $800,000 isn’t really that big of a deal.”
NFL fans and analysts are eagerly awaiting the outcome of an internal investigation being conducted by The Athletic into Russini’s journalistic standards since she joined the outlet from ESPN three years ago.
