Zion Williamson is the NBA’s ultimate force of nature, a player who is physically blessed and turns the paint into a personal highlight reel every time he steps onto the hardwood. But his availability has always been the single biggest variable for the New Orleans Pelicans’ front office.
Despite the massive rookie extension in 2022, the conversation about Williamson has always been as much about the “if” as the “how.” But the narrative is changing, as Williamson has reached 51 games this season and has triggered a clause that increases his guaranteed salary for next season by $8.4 million.
Zion Williamson Reaches Major Contract Milestone for 2026-27 Season
ESPN front office insider Bobby Marks reported via his social media account, “Another contract milestone for Williamson. For playing in 51 games, Williamson’s guaranteed salary next season increases from $16.9M to $25.3M. Prior to the start of the season, his $42.2M salary in 2026-27 had $0 protection.”
Williamson is currently serving the five-year rookie max extension, worth $197.2 million, that he signed on July 6, 2022, his 22nd birthday. The contract became active in 2023 and will keep the big man in New Orleans through the 2027-28 season. With All-Star honors, this contract can potentially reach up to $231 million.
Under this deal, Williamson was guaranteed $197,230,450 and an average annual salary of $39,446,090, per Spotrac. This season, he will earn a base salary of $39,446,090 while carrying a cap hit of $39,446,090.
For the 2026-27 campaign, Williamson is set to earn $42.2 million in salary. But this amount had $0 in protection, meaning the Pelicans would have significant leverage if injuries persisted.
With the stakes so high, his recent health is a massive step toward securing the full value of that deal. In the 2025-26 season, he has played 51 games, averaging 21.4 points, 5.9 rebounds, and 3.3 assists while shooting 58.8% from the field.

Pelicans governor Gayle Benson, during Williamson’s initial signing, said, “We are building a foundation of sustained success. We have a wonderful mix of young talent and veteran leadership, and adding Zion long-term to this roster is something that I know our fans are very excited to see come together on the floor this season and for many seasons to come.”
She added, “Zion’s talents are not only transformative on the court, but his commitment to our community, our city, and region will also be transformative. What a wonderful birthday for him and his family.”
The leap in salary from $16.9 million to $25.3 million signals a maturing process for the 25-year-old star, as meeting the 51-game mark isn’t just about the money. It’s proof that the Pelicans’ conditioning programs and medical oversight are yielding results.
Williamson’s Impact on the New Orleans Pelicans
Williamson was selected as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft by the New Orleans Pelicans after a dominant career at Duke. Since joining the Pelicans, Williamson has been one of the most efficient interior scorers in the NBA, averaging 24.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists, while shooting 48.8% from the floor and 32.4% from the arc in 264 games.
With the playoffs about a month away, the Pelicans are not faring well. They are currently placed in the bottom three of the Western Conference standings with a 22-46 record. Despite a healthy and financially motivated Williamson, the 2025-26 NBA season can be considered a lost one for the franchise.
