Anthony Davis hasn’t had the best run lately. Last season was rough for him after he got traded from the Lakers to the Mavericks, only to have his campaign derailed by injury. Fast forward to this year. History seems to be repeating itself.
Davis is once again sidelined with an injury, and now he’s wearing a Washington Wizards jersey. With all this uncertainty swirling around, Wizards GM Will Dawkins recently opened up about where things stand with Davis and his future.
Washington Wizards’ GM’s Recent Comment Regarding Anthony Davis
In a recent interview with NBA reporter Ben Strober, Dawkins was asked whether the Wizards are planning to offer Davis a contract extension.
Dawkins made it clear that the front office hasn’t even started talking with Davis’s agent, Rich Paul, yet. According to the GM, any serious discussions about a contract extension can’t really happen until the summer anyway.
“We haven’t had any conversations about that. But we cannot talk about it until the summer time. But Rich Paul, myself, and Michael Winger have a good relationship. So when the time comes to have these conversations, I’m sure we will come to something. But the most important thing is getting him healthy and getting him on the floor so that he can play with his teammates,” Dawkins said during the interview.
Davis is already tied to one of the biggest contracts in the league.
The last deal he signed came in August 2023. It was when he agreed to a three-year, $175,369,698 extension with the Lakers. This season, Davis is set to earn $54,126,450. He is owed $58.5 million next season and also holds a player option worth $62.8 million for the 2027–28 campaign. Plus, he’ll be eligible to sign another extension come August.
However, there is also a growing belief that the Wizards may not even keep Davis long-term.
Just a few days ago, NBA insider Chris Haynes shared an interesting update during a segment on Sirius XM’s NBA Radio. Haynes revealed that Davis and Paul were expected to sit down with the Wizards to discuss what comes next.
While Haynes did not directly say a trade is coming, his comments strongly hinted that Davis’ future in Washington is far from certain.
“What I can say is that Rich Paul, his agent, and Anthony Davis will both be having conversations with the Wizards front office to try to figure out their plans moving forward. What is the agenda for this season? What is the agenda beyond this season…”

“Those conversations will be held as early as today, possibly tomorrow. This weekend, they want to get a clear picture as well,” Haynes said during the segment.
Injuries have once again played a major role in all of this as Davis has been out since January 9, when he injured his left finger during a game against the Utah Jazz. The injury occurred late in the game while he was defending Lauri Markkanen on a drive to the basket. Davis exited with just over two minutes remaining and never returned.
He is expected to be on the court in the 2026-27 season. Now, all eyes are on Davis’ recovery and what the Wizards decide to do next.
