Anthony Davis has been dragged into the LeBron James speculations since free agency started almost three weeks ago. After the four-time MVP decided to leave the Los Angeles Lakers, some NBA insiders reported that the two could end up playing for the Golden State Warriors.
While the popular narrative pointed to AD joining James, the Washington Wizards’ star gave a surprising answer when asked about his former teammate’s potential landing spot.

A potential James-Davis reunion in the Bay Area surged once Draymond Green declined his $27.7 million player option with the Warriors last month. With Green becoming an unrestricted free agent, the Dubs had salary-cap room to sign the four-time NBA Finals MVP.
Once Green did his part, reports emerged that the Warriors could trade the injured Jimmy Butler to the Wizards to acquire Davis.
A James-Davis collaboration might indeed happen again, but not at the expected destination.
On Friday, sports writer Chase Coburn, a confessed diehard Wizards fan, posed a question to Davis that introduced an unforeseen scenario in the race to land James. AD responded with a new angle when asked if he could persuade James to take his talents to Washington.
“Maybe. We had some conversations,” the 10-time All-Star replied after a slight hesitation.

The Davis-to-Warriors rumors lost steam when NBA insider Brian Windhorst reported last month that the Warriors told Butler they were not trading him.
A day later, another NBA insider, Marc J. Spears, reported the bigger obstacle to a scenario where Davis goes to the Warriors. Spears wrote that the “Washington Wizards have no interest in trading All-Star forward Anthony Davis and are not listening to offers for him.”
With the Warriors unlikely to get Davis, signing James in free agency is reportedly out. Windhorst’s ESPN colleague Shams Charania said last month that the two are “a package deal to come to Golden State.”
Recently, the Miami Heat, Cleveland Cavaliers, and Philadelphia 76ers have been rumored to be the leading contenders to get James.
After Davis’ comment, the Wizards, improbably, might have a shot at him, too.

The Wizards are predicted to challenge for a playoff spot with AD, Trae Young, and No. 1 pick AJ Dybantsa forming their core.
Washington’s young crew, which includes Alex Sarr, Tre Johnson, Bilal Coulibaly, Kyshawn George, and Will Riley, is another strength for the team. Adding veterans Khris Middleton and DeAndre Ayton has only made the team more well-balanced and deeper.
If James thinks he can compete for a championship with Davis and Washington’s retooled roster, perhaps the Wizards could pull off one of the biggest surprises in free-agency history and sign the 41-year-old superstar.
