LeBron James said during Thursday’s “Mind the Game” podcast at the Fanatics Fest that he would soon make his free agency decision. The four-time MVP has been without a team for nearly three weeks since he announced late last month that he was leaving the Los Angeles Lakers.
On Friday, an NBA insider who has extensively covered James and the Lakers shared intel on the latest about the superstar’s looming decision.
LeBron James Rumors Heat Up Following Major Insider Update
James has been evaluating his options since becoming an unrestricted free agent. Early this month, his agent, Rich Paul, on the “Game Over” podcast, told co-host Max Kellerman that they were looking at 10 teams that could sign the 22-time All-Star.
Paul has repeatedly said that James has all the information he needs but has been taking his time, given that the 2026-27 campaign could be his final season in the NBA.
NBA insider Dave McMenamin shared a possible timeline for when James could make the long-awaited decision about his next team.
“Multiple sources familiar with his thinking told me in the last 24 hours that he is truly getting much closer to a decision. … Everyone is just hoping it comes as early as next week, possibly in the early part of next week,” McMenamin said.

McMenamin continued that the Golden State Warriors, Minnesota Timberwolves, Cleveland Cavaliers, Miami Heat, and Philadelphia 76ers have players who have made “personal appeals” to James to join them. Cavaliers guard Donovan Mitchell made one such pitch on Thursday.
The ESPN reporter added that although James has not eliminated any team, the four-time NBA Finals MVP is leaning towards an Eastern Conference team to avoid an NBA Finals-like battle just to get out of the West.

Like many, McMenamin speculated that Miami and Cleveland could be the frontrunners, given James’ championship-winning history with either team.
He noted that among the contenders for the NBA all-time scoring king’s signature, the Heat might have the upper hand as Giannis Antetokounmpo, who wants James to take his talents again to South Beach, is the best player on any of the mentioned teams.
The NBA fans aren’t the only ones eagerly waiting for James to announce his next basketball destination. League commissioner Adam Silver also said on Thursday’s Game Plan that logistics have been held up until the James free agency uncertainty is settled.
According to Silver, James needs to end the suspense so the NBA can finalize next season’s schedule and announce it.
If McMenamin’s sources were spot on, James could end his longest stint in free agency in the next few days.
