Why Did Kristaps Porziņģis Leave Knicks? Revisiting Now-Celtics Star’s Controversial Exit From New York

Explore the untold story behind Kristaps Porziņģis’ sudden Knicks exit -- what went wrong, and how it changed his career forever.

Kristaps Porzingis, a towering talent once hailed as New York’s savior, vanished from Madison Square Garden almost overnight. What happened behind closed doors that led to Porziņģis’s sudden exit? The answers lie in a tale of ambition, missteps, and a franchise at a crossroads.

Kristaps Porziņģis and the Fractured Foundation

When Porziņģis was selected No. 4 overall by the New York Knicks in the 2015 NBA Draft, he was hailed as the franchise’s long-awaited cornerstone — a 7-foot-3 “unicorn” who could stretch the floor and protect the rim.

However, the organization around him was anything but stable. The Knicks endured coaching changes, front-office infighting, and inconsistent roster construction during his first two seasons, leading to 101 combined losses and growing unrest in Porziņģis’ camp.

Knicks president Steve Mills later remarked that Porziņģis “hadn’t fully bought in to the team’s plans for the future,” and that the young star “no longer wanted to be a part of our group” during a January 2019 meeting.

By the spring of 2017, that dysfunction reached a tipping point. Porziņģis famously skipped his exit meeting with then-president Phil Jackson and general manager Steve Mills, a move that signaled his frustration with the dysfunction and drama surrounding the organization and prompted several NBA teams to call with trade offers within days.

Those calls underscored how Porziņģis’ disillusionment had become common knowledge league-wide, further eroding his relationship with the Knicks’ front office. Reflecting years later on that period, Porziņģis admitted he was hurt by the way events unfolded.

“Could I go back and do things differently? For sure, from our side. I was hurt. If I kept playing, it would’ve been completely different. I’m young and listening to people … You don’t know any better.”

He maintained that he “enjoyed it so much playing … in front of those fans,” but those early missteps set the stage for a more definitive break.

Porziņģis’ Trade Request and Final Break

On Jan. 31, 2019, league insiders reported that Porziņģis “left the Knicks with the impression that he prefers to be traded,” according to ESPN. In that same meeting, he voiced concerns over the team’s direction and a lack of sustainable culture — remarks that convinced New York’s brass to engage seriously in trade discussions.

Within a day, it was confirmed that the Dallas Mavericks were the interested team in the trade. New York sent Porziņģis, Tim Hardaway Jr., Courtney Lee, and Trey Burke to Dallas for DeAndre Jordan, Wesley Matthews, Dennis Smith Jr., and two draft picks; the transfer was finalized on Feb. 1.

The speed with which the trade was concluded was a good visual indication of the deterioration of the relationship and the immediate need to start anew on both sides. In turn, Mills justified the decision, saying that ending the relationship with a star that pays handsomely was a painful but necessary step on the way to the team’s long-term development.

Porziņģis, owning his new start, became part of his new team. Later, he played a key role in helping the Boston Celtics win an NBA championship in 2024. It’s a notable achievement and a significant point in his incredible career.

Looking back, Porziņģis’ exit from New York was the culmination of mutual frustration: a talented young All-Star caught in a franchise mired by instability, and an organization unwilling or unable to provide the structure he needed. His departure underscored how quickly a promise can sour in the NBA when alignment breaks down, and it remains one of the most talked-about trades of the past decade.
