For years, fans have admired the strong connection NBA players maintain with their children. Whether LeBron James boasts Bronny’s successes or Stephen Curry captures cherished moments with his children, the NBA community has frequently served as a forum for proud fatherhood.
However, there could be no more poignant relationship than the one Kobe Bryant, the late Lakers legend, had with his daughter, Gianna Bryant. Their untimely death on January 26, 2020, on a helicopter flight en route to a youth basketball game at Mamba Sports Academy not only left the basketball world devastated over the loss of a legend, but it also made the world mourn a loving father and an exceptional daughter.
One stands out among the many cherished memories of Bryant and Gianna when the “Black Mamba” openly shared what he loved most about “Mambacita”.

Kobe Bryant Always Admired Gianna Bryant’s Curiosity for Basketball
In 2020, the Los Angeles Times published an article by Arash Markazi, recounting what would be Bryant’s final interview with the author, conducted back in October 2019, and during this heartfelt conversation, Bryant spoke candidly about Gianna, who was also affectionately known as “Gigi.”
“What I love about Gigi is her curiosity about the game. She’s very curious. Even in a heated situation in a game where it’s going back and forth, she can detach herself and come to me and ask a very specific question, which is not common.”
“She’ll come over and say, ‘OK, on this particular trap, when I’m trying to close the gap but she’s getting on the outside, do I need to change my angle?’ It’s a very specific question. That’s pretty damn cool,” said Bryant regarding what he loved about Gianna.

Bryant’s relationship with his wife, Vanessa, was equally remarkable. The couple first crossed paths when Vanessa was just 17 years old, still a high school senior in Southern California.
Bryant had already begun to turn heads at the Lakers. It was not long before they bonded, and in April 2001, the couple tied the knot. Throughout the years, they created a stunning family, giving birth to four daughters: Natalia, Gianna, Bianka, and Capri.
Gianna Bryant’s love for basketball was undeniable from an early age. She began her journey at Harbor Day School in Newport Beach, where her passion for the game started to flourish.
Bryant usually told stories about Gianna’s perseverance and how she wanted to create her future. During a conversation with NBA legend Reggie Miller, Bryant disclosed that his daughter had her eyes set on attending the University of Connecticut (UConn) to play on the Huskies, an elite women’s hoops program in the United States.
“I’m telling you, she is hellbent on UConn, hellbent on UConn,” said Bryant to Miller during the conversation.

Bryant’s basketball career was also legendary. His 20 spectacular seasons with the Lakers were full of excellent results: he averaged 25 points, 5.2 rebounds, and 4.7 assists per game.
Bryant’s admiration for Gianna’s curiosity perfectly encapsulated the depth of their relationship.
