What Happened to Shai Gilgeous-Alexander? Why the Reigning MVP Is Sitting Out the 2026 NBA All-Star Game

In the new-look 3-team format, why is Oklahoma City Thunder star Shai Gilgeous-Alexander missing the 2026 NBA All-Star game?

The allure of the NBA All-Star game isn’t what it used to be. While it’s still an event that captures the imagination of the basketball world, the lack of intensity and competitiveness has made it a tougher sell. Sometimes, though, a few key players missing can also cause a major difference.

In recent years, the lackadaisical playstyle of these games has created a divide between those on the court and those taking in the product. But with key players missing the game completely, it robs fans of seeing their favorite players in action. This year, for instance, the biggest omission is the reigning NBA MVP, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.

Why Is Shai Gilgeous-Alexander Not Playing in the All-Star Game?

Selected in the middle of the draft selection for the Los Angeles Clippers, no one could have anticipated that Alexander would turn into the phenom he is today. But the infamous Paul George trade with the Oklahoma City Thunder allowed him to become the best version of himself.

Emerging as a one-man offensive engine, he improved on the defensive end as well, becoming one of the most complete guards in the history of the game. A patient rebuild for the Thunder further allowed them to put the right pieces around him.

Once everything was in place, he exploded for a historic season in 2024-25, winning league MVP before leading Oklahoma City to their first NBA Championship in franchise history. This year, the hope is that he can repeat his brilliance from last season.

And so far, he’s held up his end of the bargain. Leading the Thunder to the league-best record of 42-14 to sit atop the Western Conference, he’s once again one of the favorites in the MVP race, as the team looks poised to make another deep run in the postseason and potentially win back-to-back titles.

But, during the All-Star game in Los Angeles, SGA won’t be on the court for the Team World roster. An abdominal strain that has kept him out of action since Feb. 3 is going to keep him out for this game as well.

Missing five straight games before the All-Star break, he’s set to be reevaluated after the weekend, as the Thunder prepare for the stretch run of the season and a potentially deep playoff run.

In his place, Alperen Şengün of the Houston Rockets got the nod and will be taking over in his place, as announced by Adam Silver.
