What Happened to Austin Reaves? Lakers Suffer Another Blow After Star Guard’s Latest Injury Update

Shams Charania reveals a concerning update on Los Angeles Lakers guard Austin Reaves' injury ahead of the game before the playoffs.

The Los Angeles Lakers are desperately clinging to the third seed in the Western Conference, but a mounting injury report threatens to derail their postseason ambitions. Head coach JJ Redick’s rotation is already stretched past its physical limits following a grueling regular season campaign.

Losing another primary offensive creator this late in the calendar presents a nightmare scenario for a franchise with legitimate championship aspirations. A murky physical issue has now thrust starting shooting guard Austin Reaves into limbo right before the playoffs.

What Happened to Austin Reaves?

Reaves tweaked his left side during Thursday’s 139-96 blowout loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder. He overextended his core while reaching for a first-quarter rebound in traffic and immediately signaled his discomfort to the bench. The 27-year-old briefly retreated to the locker room for medical evaluation before toughing it out and returning to the floor.

He managed to finish the contest with 15 points, though his mobility appeared noticeably compromised down the stretch.

After the final buzzer, Reaves completely downplayed the severity of the issue to reporters. He claimed he merely felt a tweak on the rebounding attempt and noted that he felt decent after receiving postgame treatment. Players routinely wave off minor soreness in April, and the initial read suggested Reaves simply experienced a brief muscle spasm.

The situation looks far more concerning 48 hours later. ESPN’s Dave McMenamin reported Saturday that Redick confirmed Reaves required extensive medical imaging once the team arrived in Texas.

As per Shams Charania’s latest report, Reaves is set to miss the remainder of the regular season. He has suffered a Grade 2 left oblique muscle injury. The guard is set to miss four to six weeks of game time, and his status for the postseason remains in major question.

This injury surfaces at the absolute worst possible time for Los Angeles. Reaves serves as the engine of the secondary unit and a vital floor-spacer alongside LeBron James. Redick trusts Reaves to create his own shot, run high pick-and-rolls, and facilitate on the perimeter.

Redick must now dig deep into his bench to keep Los Angeles anchored in the West’s top three. The Western Conference standings remain incredibly volatile. A single loss in Dallas could send the Lakers tumbling down into the play-in tournament picture right before the postseason begins.

The front office built this current roster to withstand the grueling 82-game marathon, but losing two foundational guards simultaneously requires immediate, drastic adjustments. The Lakers have absolutely no margin for error, and they are officially running out of healthy bodies to play.
