A year ago, in 2025, Dallas Mavericks fans suffered their worst heartbreak after Luka Dončić was traded to the Los Angeles Lakers. The move sparked a series of reactions in the NBA, eventually landing the Mavericks with Cooper Flagg as their No. 1 lottery pick.
However, there’s no denying Dončić’s longtime connection to Dallas. And while he’s part of the Lakers’ roster now, he hasn’t completely gotten the Mavericks out of his system.
Lakers’ Luka Dončić Almost Walks Into the Mavericks Locker Room at Previous Home Venue
Almost a year into his trade, Dončić was back at the American Airlines Center for a Mavericks-Lakers clash. However, during the Lakers’ 116-110 win, Dončić surprised fans by almost walking into his old locker room.
The clip went viral soon after, with fans joking that no matter where he goes, Dončić’s heart will always be in Dallas.
Of course, the 26-year-old spoke to the media about his return. Though he’s currently focused on leading the Lakers to a possible championship, Dallas will always remain special to him.
“I was happy to be back here. I went to my house,” he told the media. “Saw my cars. But, you know, obviously, (it’s) always going to be emotional. I really appreciate how they cheer for me when I was introduced. And it’s always gonna be a special place for me.”
Drafted by the Mavericks in 2018, Dončić’s presence in Dallas had everyone convinced he would play with them his entire career.
Of course, ownership had other plans, earning ample criticism from fans. Even Flagg joining as the star rookie wasn’t enough; many were asking for Dončić to return eventually. Furthermore, as Dončić said, the fans gave him a loud standing ovation upon his entry.
Dončić Surprised Fans With Gifts During Dallas Return
Apart from his stellar 33-point game, Dončić arrived in Dallas with a few gifts for his fans.
“Dallas will always be special to Luka,” ESPN reported. “Almost a year after the trade to LA, Luka surprised 22 fans who supported him on social media with a suite for Lakers–Mavs, a pregame meet & greet, and gift bags with Luka Lakers jerseys and his signature shoe.”
Not only did he rent a suite, but he also brought special gifts. Of course, Dončić remains grateful to his fans — who have stayed loyal to him despite a team change.
With the Mavericks for seven whole seasons, Dončić averaged 28.6 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 8.3 assists in 422 games for the team. In his first full season with the Lakers, he is averaging 33.4 points, 8.7 assists, and 7.8 rebounds.
