WATCH: Victor Wembanyama Goes Viral For Hilariously Formal Introduction to Spurs’ No. 2 Pick Dylan Harper

Victor Wembanyama welcomes Dylan Harper to the Spurs in a way that is both humble and hilarious.

It has been a foregone conclusion for some time that the San Antonio Spurs would select Dylan Harper from Rutgers with the second pick in the 2025 NBA Draft. Therefore, it was a surprise to no one when his name was called by commissioner Adam Silver for the Spurs selection.

It’s quite common for a star player or a coach to call a newly drafted rookie to welcome them to the team. Harper had this experience when he received a FaceTime call from Spurs superstar Victor Wembanyama, who offered a humorous introduction to his new teammate.

Dylan Harper is Welcomed by Victor Wembanyama

If you showed a picture of Wembanyama to anyone who watches basketball, chances are that they would recognize him immediately. But Wembanyama is a man who likes to check every box, so when he called Harper, he made sure that he knew who he was talking to by saying, “Hey. I play for the Spurs. My name is Vic.”

Harper couldn’t help but laugh and retort, “I know who you is. My name is Dylan, I just got drafted by the Spurs. I think I’m your teammate now.” After the pleasantries, Wembanyama gave his newest teammate some advice, telling him to enjoy the moment and soak it all in.

Both players were then committed to getting to work almost immediately after Harper enjoyed his moment as a new draft pick. Both seem to be on the same page right away, which is what you want with a new point guard and his center.

The Spurs have high hopes for Harper, as he joins a talented guard group with De’Aaron Fox, Stephon Castle, and Devin Vassell, with the Spurs looking to get back in the playoffs for the first time since 2019. Harper presents tremendous upside for the Spurs, with many scouts projecting him as a future All-Star with a complete offensive game.

His establishment of synergy with the team’s star player right when he gets drafted is a great sign for Spurs fans, who have had the fortune of drafting the last two NBA Rookie of the Year winners (Wembanyama in 23-24 and Castle in 24-25). Chances are that they will not be in this sort of draft position for a while as they enter Wembanyama’s prime. Now the work begins for Harper and the Spurs as they prepare to make a splash in the Western Conference next season.
