Spurs Star Victor Wembanyama Spotted Training Hours After Concerning Injury Update

Victor Wembanyama is set to miss significant time, threatening his MVP chase, but there’s finally some encouraging news. More here.

San Antonio Spurs star Victor Wembanyama was one of the standouts in the NBA regular season’s early moments. He looked like a strong candidate to win the Most Valuable Player Award this season. However, Wembanyama’s campaign was dealt a massive blow after he suffered a serious calf injury. An NBA insider provided an update on Wembanyama, which should be encouraging to Spurs fans.

What Is The Latest Update On Victor Wembanyama

NBA insider Jared Weiss reported that Wembanyama is still working out despite suffering a left calf strain. Weiss said “Wemby working on the sidelines after being ruled out 2-3 weeks with a calf strain.”

Wembanyama is averaging 26.2 points and 12.9 rebounds per game this season on 50.2% shooting from the field. The defensive force is also averaging 3.6 blocks per game. Perhaps most impressively, Wembanyama’s impact has helped the Spurs get off to a great start, as they are currently fifth in the Western Conference standings with a 9-4 record.

Losing Wembanyama for an extended period of time is a huge blow to the Spurs, though they were able to win their first game since his injury 123-110 over the Sacramento Kings. Perhaps the silver lining in this situation is that Wembanyama’s projected absence is occuring during a relatively easy part of the schedule.

The Spurs have tough road games in the next three weeks against the Denver Nuggets, Minnesota Timberwolves, and Cleveland Cavaliers, but should be able to maintain their spot in the playoff race until Wembanyama returns.

The NBA will certainly want Wembanyama healthy for the Christmas Day game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, but the Spurs will probably be cautious. There’s league wide concern over calf strains, as rushing back quickly can lead to season ending Achilles injuries, such as what happened to Indiana Pacers star point guard Tyrese Haliburton.

Many Spurs fans are probably frustrated that Wembanyama’s momentum has been derailed by another injury. He was likely to make an All-NBA team last season, but was diagnosed with a deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder this past February. The diagnosis caused Wembanyama to miss the regular season and fall short of the minimum 65 games played threshold to qualify for an All-NBA team.

The footage of Wembanyama training despite his calf strain is a sign of his work ethic and perhaps a message that he’ll be cleared for game action after his projected recovery timeline is over.
