Victor Wembanyama’s MVP hopes hit a painful barrier Monday night. The 7-foot-4 anchor exited the San Antonio Spurs’ 115-102 home victory over the Philadelphia 76ers early after absorbing a sharp, inadvertent elbow to his left side.
Wembanyama suffered a left rib contusion and was ruled out for the second half. The concerning setback sparked questions about his availability as the season winds down.

How Victor Wembanyama’s Setback Impacts the Spurs’ Postseason Ambitions
The sequence played out early in the second quarter when Wembanyama was sprinting up the court on a fast break, and 76ers forward Paul George attempted to deflect a pass.
George’s elbow caught Wembanyama directly in the ribs with 10:49 remaining in the half. The Frenchman stayed on the court for a minute, wincing. He subbed out shortly after and disappeared into the tunnel, holding his left arm tight against his side.

The MVP contender tried to give it another go, returning to the floor with 5:33 left in the second quarter and laboring through the next stretch before asking for a substitution with 44 seconds left before intermission. Wembanyama finished the night with 17 points, 5 rebounds, and 3 blocks in 16 minutes of action.
The Spurs are eyeing a deep playoff run as the Western Conference’s No. 2 seed, and losing Wembanyama for an extended duration will have a devastating impact on their postseason ambitions.
Typically, a rib contusion involves blunt force trauma, which ruptures the blood vessels around the rib cage. This results in localized bruising of the surrounding muscles and tissues, which may take 1 to 3 weeks to heal.

For Wembanyama, this means the exact timeline of his return depends heavily on the severity of the bruise. Injury management becomes even more crucial for the Frenchman due to his game relying on core strength and lateral movement.
Extending for rebounds and absorbing contact from opposing big men could aggravate the bruised tissue and worsen the injury.

Rib injuries are painful!
There’s basically 5 options:
1. Rib contusion/bruise
2. Rib cartilage injury
3. Rib fracture
4. Rib fracture + rib cartilage injury
5. Rib fracture + organ injury (lung)… https://t.co/r7LvV5wEsG pic.twitter.com/8xUMbjTChK— Jesse Morse, M.D. (@DrJesseMorse) April 7, 2026
The Spurs also need to manage his minutes to ensure Wembanyama reaches the 65-game requirement to be eligible for regular-season awards. While the team does not need to rush him, the 22-year-old must play at least 20 minutes in one of the remaining three games to qualify, as per reports.
After the game, Spurs coach Mitch Johnson could not detail the severity of Wembanyama’s injury.
“At halftime, I was told he wasn’t coming back. I haven’t heard anything else up to this point,” Johnson said. “I think it would be a positive that he felt like he could come back, and he played the last four or five minutes of the half. So, that’s a positive from my perspective.”
If the injury lingers past the initial one-week recovery window, the Spurs face a harrowing scenario, as Wembanyama has been unstoppable this season, averaging 24.8 points, 11.5 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks across 63 outings.
Spurs star Victor Wembanyama is listed doubtful to play in Wednesday’s game against Portland due to a rib contusion but there’s confidence he will play at least one of the team’s final three regular-season games.

According to recent reports, the Spurs phenom will not play in the game against the Portland Trail Blazers. But Shams Charania mentioned that there is some optimism that Wembanyama will feature in one of the remaining three outings.
