After a career-best season in which he averaged 12.5 points and 3.4 assists while shooting an efficient 51.6% from the field, Ty Jerome has quickly become a sought-after name in NBA free agency.
The steady spark off Cleveland’s bench is now attracting serious interest from several Western Conference teams in need of a reliable backcourt presence.
According to league insiders, the Utah Jazz, fresh off selecting forward Ace Bailey with the No. 5 pick, have emerged as the leading suitors. The team views Jerome’s efficiency as a key piece in accelerating the rebuild.

Lonzo Ball Trade Signals Cleveland Cavaliers’ New Direction
Cleveland, meanwhile, is dealing with major financial limitations. With a projected payroll of $216 million, well above the luxury tax threshold, the Cavaliers have minimal flexibility to re-sign Jerome without triggering steep tax penalties.
Adding urgency to their decision is the expected absence of star point guard Darius Garland, who is slated to miss the start of next season due to toe surgery.
When discussing the possibility of Jerome returning to Cleveland, ClutchPoints insider Brett Siegel wrote, “After trading for [Lonzo] Ball, it looks increasingly unlikely that the Cleveland Cavaliers’ Sixth Man of the Year finalist Ty Jerome will return in free agency. Plenty of teams will hold interest in potentially signing Jerome using their full mid-level exception in free agency.”

In preparation for Jerome’s eventual departure, the Cavaliers have already begun reshaping their roster. On June 28, Cleveland completed a trade with the Chicago Bulls, acquiring the 27-year-old Ball in exchange for small forward Isaac Okoro. Ball returned to action during the 2024–25 season after spending two years recovering from a left knee injury, appearing in 35 games and averaging 7.6 points and 3.3 assists.
Ball’s arrival aligns with a bold move made by the Cavaliers on draft night: the selection of Duke shooting guard Tyrese Proctor with the 49th overall pick. Proctor, a 6-foot-6 combo guard, is expected to offer floor spacing alongside Donovan Mitchell and Evan Mobley and fits right alongside Cleveland’s core.
Cavaliers Rumored To Let Ty Jerome Slide to Another Team
For Jerome, the departure from Cleveland could be lucrative. Insider Jake Fischer reports that Jerome is seeking a deal in the range of the full mid‑level exception (approximately $14.1 million). It is an offer that a team like Utah, sitting below the tax apron, can comfortably extend.
Meanwhile, only the Detroit Pistons and Brooklyn Nets have the cap space to offer Jerome more than $14.1 million. Utah remains firmly in the mix, though, with their interest tied to internal cap maneuvering as Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson are both considered potential trade candidates.

Siegel explained, “Outside of dealing with the drama that comes with selecting Bailey, the Jazz have remained active on the trade block. In addition to talking about Collin Sexton, Jordan Clarkson and John Collins trades with multiple teams, Utah has not backed down from going big-game hunting.”
As free agency officially opens soon, all eyes will be on Jerome’s decision. Will he join a Western Conference upstart eager for backcourt stability, or will the Cavaliers find a way to retain him despite looming luxury tax penalties? Either way, Cleveland’s aggressive pursuit of Ball and Proctor signals a new era in a city accustomed to a fast‑paced, high‑scoring offense.
