The NBA community is in a heated debate after a controversial video involving Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards went viral. The situation has drawn attention from prominent figures in the sports world and continues to gain traction.
Fans who follow Edwards strictly for his on-court performances may not have been aware of his personal life issues until now. The release of this video has brought those matters to the forefront, making it a serious and sensitive topic.
Timberwolves’ Anthony Edwards Labeled a ‘Deadbeat Dad’ Over Custody Dispute
In today’s social media-driven world, opinions form quickly, often without full context. Reports surfaced that Edwards declined visitation or custody of his four-month-old daughter. He stood firm on his stance, arguing that men should have the right to decide whether they want to become fathers.
While some supported his perspective, others quickly criticized and labeled him a “deadbeat dad” who wanted to avoid responsibility. Many women across the U.S. have taken notice of the drama surrounding the NBA star, further fueling the discussion.

One woman went as far as filming her child inside a sneaker store, attempting to convince him to boycott Edwards’ shoes because he “doesn’t treat women right.” Many on social media sided with her, attacking Edwards over his personal decisions.
Cam Newton Speaks on the Controversy
Cam Newton — former NFL star with the Carolina Panthers — weighed in on the debate on his podcast “4th & 1.” Newton offered a different perspective on the situation, emphasizing the power of influence.
“This is a message to all parents and all adults. Everything, and I mean everything, in life is taught behavior. Hatred is taught, too. So now this kid has been implanted with a seed in his mind that he never knew. Now, when he’s on the playground, ‘Hey, I’m LeBron James, I’m Steph Curry’ — but what did he hear about Anthony Edwards?”
Newton continued, calling out the implications of the sneaker boycott video.
“It is unfair and unjust and really undocumented to see a Black boy, and heaven forbid he is from Atlanta. That kid goes into a DTLR, goes into a Foot Locker, knowing that Anthony Edwards is from Atlanta or one of the few who looks like him in the NBA, and that’s what you put in his mind?”
The former NFL star wrapped up his thoughts by pointing out how the media shapes narratives.
“Never mind that he was the No. 1 pick, never mind that he changed his own lineage, never mind that he takes care of his momma. It’s sad that we live in an age where people get more information from a blog than a book.”

While Newton raised valid points about public perception, the accusations against Edwards — particularly claims that he tried to “force” an abortion after engaging in unprotected intercourse — continue to dominate the conversation.
With growing backlash, Edwards may be forced to make a public statement or take steps to repair his image with fans and the general public.
