‘Pistons Gonna Be in Trouble’ — Magic Legend Tracy McGrady Makes Eerily Familiar Upset Prediction

Tracy McGrady predicts an upset as the Magic stun the Pistons in Game 1, but history against Detroit tells a different story.

The Orlando Magic overcame late-season struggles at just the right time and opened the playoffs with a statement win over the top-seeded Detroit Pistons.

In Game 1 of their first-round series on Sunday in Detroit, Orlando secured a convincing 112-101 victory. If they sustain that level of play, franchise legend Tracy McGrady believes an upset could be on the table.

Paolo Banchero led the way for the Magic with 23 points and 9 rebounds, with Orlando’s balanced attack proving decisive. Every Magic starter scored at least 16 points, with Franz Wagner adding 19 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Wendell Carter Jr. and Desmond Bane each contributed 17 points and 5 assists. Jalen Suggs chipped in 16 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals.

The Magic also controlled the glass, outrebounding Detroit 45-39, a trend that could prove pivotal as the series progresses.

“If Paolo can play this way and you get the help from Franz and Suggs…the Detroit Pistons is gonna be in trouble because they’re playing confident,” McGrady said on NBA Showtime.

“Look how they played against Charlotte (play-in) and coming to a hostile environment and you get the job done in that fashion…and if you bring that same type of intensity and attention to detail, we are gonna have a real conversation.”

Detroit entered the playoffs as one of the league’s most dominant teams, finishing with 60 wins and the NBA’s second-best defensive rating (108.9), trailing only the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Pistons also held onto the No. 1 seed despite star guard Cade Cunningham missing time late in the season with a collapsed lung.

Conversely, the Magic, plagued by a stagnant offense, finished 45-37 and needed two play-in games to clinch a playoff spot. This, combined with rumors of Orlando coach Jamahl Mosley being on the hot seat, had some pundits predicting a short series against Detroit.

Game 1, however, has shifted the narrative. Orlando now has reason to believe, but history offers a cautionary tale.

In the 2003 playoffs, the No. 8-seeded Magic took a 3-1 series lead over the top-seeded Pistons in the first round, with McGrady leading the charge and finishing as the top scorer in each of the first four games.

Confident in the outcome, McGrady infamously declared the series was over, but Detroit stormed back behind Chauncey Billups, winning three straight to take the series 4-3.

Sunday’s loss extended Detroit’s home playoff losing streak to 11 games, dating back to 2008, the longest such streak in the league’s history.

The Pistons will need a far more complete performance in Game 2 to avoid falling into a 2-0 hole. But if Orlando continues to execute at this level, McGrady’s upset prediction may not seem so far-fetched after all.
