‘Tour Dates From the Field’ — NBA World Rips Austin Reaves’ ‘Brutal’ Return as Lakers Drop Game 5 vs. Rockets

Austin Reaves' rusty Game 5 performance vs. Houston sparks backlash as the Lakers squander another chance to close out the series.

Anticipation was sky-high for Austin Reaves to make his triumphant return to the Los Angeles Lakers’ lineup for Wednesday’s Game 5 home clash against the Houston Rockets.

While Reaves and the Lakers started strong, they ultimately fizzled out against Houston’s defensive pressure, with the star guard posting a divisive final stat line. After the Kevin Durant-less Rockets’ gritty 99-93 road victory, the NBA world zeroed in on Reaves’ offensive shortcomings.

Austin Reaves’ Rusty Game 5 Performance Sparks Backlash as Lakers’ Series Lead Shrinks

Reaves suited up for the first time since April 2 after missing the final five games of the regular season and the first four outings of LA’s first-round Western Conference playoff series due to a Grade 2 left oblique strain.

The undrafted playmaker’s presence was felt early, as he set up his co-star, LeBron James, and big man Deandre Ayton for easy baskets inside and buried a deep 3-pointer as part of an electric 8-point first quarter.

However, after coming out of the gates strong, Reaves later struggled with his shot against Houston’s defensive intensity. While he finished with 22 points, 4 rebounds, and 6 assists off the bench, he went just 4-for-16 overall (25%), including 2-for-8 from deep (25%), missing multiple looks down the stretch as LA mounted a furious comeback from a 13-point fourth-quarter deficit.

Despite coming within one possession late, the Lakers couldn’t get over the hump, as James and Reaves settled for long-range shots in crunch time, which repeatedly missed the mark.

While Reaves was expected to show rust after a nearly month-long absence, that didn’t stop the NBA community on X from piling on the 27-year-old postgame.

“Brutal,” Legion Hoops captioned Reaves’ shooting numbers.

“Austin Reaves returned tonight and put up tour dates from the field,” one user quipped.

“Playoff Austin Reaves [is] one of the worst players this league has ever seen,” another asserted.

Meanwhile, after shooting 12-for-13 from the free-throw line (92.3%) to salvage his stat line, Reaves caught flak for exaggerating contact and receiving a favorable whistle.

“Austin Reaves flops as hard as he plays,” veteran NBA analyst Skip Bayless opined.

“Nah, man, Austin Reaves has the CRAZIEST whistle I’ve ever seen. This is ridiculous,” Rockets podcaster Bradeaux reacted.

“Austin Reaves flopping ALL OVER THE PLACE in crunch time 😭,” BrickCenter captioned a lowlight reel of Reaves attempting to sell fouls.

After receiving a collective team effort, spearheaded by forward Jabari Smith Jr.’s 22-point showing, the Rockets secured their second straight win without Durant (ankle) to stave off elimination.

Now leading the series 3-2, the Lakers’ next chance to finish the job will come in Friday’s Game 6 showdown in Houston, giving them little time to recalibrate their stagnating offense sans Luka Dončić (hamstring).
