LeBron James’ decision to join the loaded Philadelphia 76ers gives him a golden opportunity to add more championships to his already legendary career. His agent, Rich Paul, defended the decision with a bold Kobe Bryant take, which prompted a response from former NBA center Olden Polynice.

James’ decision to sign a two-year veteran minimum deal with the 76ers surprised many around the NBA. However, the four-time champion explained that his choice was driven by the goal of putting himself in the best position to compete for another title. That championship-first mentality was also a defining trait of Bryant throughout his career.
Speaking on his own podcast, “Game Over with Max Kellerman and Rich Paul,” the agent drew a connection between the two. “I actually think this is something Kobe would be extremely… I don’t know if proud’s the right word, but I think he would be like ‘hell yeah.’ Because it’s a challenge, it’s a competitive move,” Paul said. Many, including Polynice, viewed the comment as speculative.
“This goes out to Rich Paul. I have nothing but respect for you as far as what you’ve accomplished and how you got there,” Polynice said on “Byron Scott’s Fast Break” on Monday. “You worked your butt off. But you need to shut the [expletive] up with that statement because that is the most asinine thing. Number one, we don’t know. You shouldn’t bring up Kobe in any way, shape, or form… that he would know the decision LeBron made. That’s some [expletive], okay.”
“This is clickbait all over again. That’s like me walking up and slapping somebody and going, Malcolm X would have understood it. I don’t know what the hell Malcolm X would understand. And so to me, don’t do that. That’s so disrespectful,” he added.
This isn’t the first time Paul has stirred debate by invoking iconic figures while discussing James. He faced similar backlash in June after calling James “the people’s champion, like Muhammad Ali” while discussing his 2016 title run with the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Polynice is not a neutral observer in this debate. He argued weeks earlier that James had “backstabbed” the Lakers by taking a pay cut to sign with Philadelphia, where he’ll join Joel Embiid, Tyrese Maxey and Jaylen Brown. James took roughly a $48 million pay cut from his Lakers salary to make the move.
“If you try to do clickbait, then go do clickbait somewhere else,” Polynice added. “Because we don’t know. LeBron made his decision; that’s it. It has nothing to do with anybody else. LeBron made his decision; that’s the best for him.”
Keeping everything aside, James’ attention now shifts to adjusting to a new environment, as joining the 76ers means learning a new system and building chemistry with a talented roster. He might also adjust to take on a smaller offensive role than the one he has carried for most of his NBA career.
