When the Phoenix Suns acquired Dillon Brooks, few expected the former Houston Rockets forward to have his breakthrough moment. But Brooks has been an excellent player for the Suns, helping them to a 21-15 win-loss record in the Western Conference.
But a good performance by Brooks has also warranted trade talks, other teams hoping to benefit from his newfound fame. However, Suns owner Mat Ishbia and head coach Jordan Ott aren’t really on board.

Suns HC Jordan Ott Reacts to Matt Ishbia’s Comments About a Dillon Brooks Trade
When the Suns traded Kevin Durant, few expected the team to perform well. But with Brooks and Devin Booker on their roster, the Suns have emerged as underdogs. Many fans continue to view them as wildcards, probably hoping for a good playoff run.
In a recent segment of FanDuel’s “Run it Back”, former NBA star DeMarcus Cousins suggested a trade where he sends Brooks to the Los Angeles Lakers for Austin Reaves.
“He’s a culture changer. He’s a proven winner… Brooks fits exactly what the Lakers need right now. … why wouldn’t you do it?” the four-time NBA All-Star said.
Some Lakers fans seemed excited at the idea, especially since their problems with defense and LeBron James have been glaringly apparent since their Christmas Day loss against the Rockets.
Ishbia was quick to call out Cousins’ trade, adding: “Don’t bother calling… Suns aren’t interested. Dillon’s not going anywhere.”
During a press conference, the media asked Ott about a possible Brooks trade and Ishbia’s comments.
“I have zero social media impact. We love Dillon. We had a big game last night. A big basketball game that we played. Loved that one. We’ve got another challenge tonight,” Ott explained.
In fact, even Cousins seemed to understand Ishbia’s view. “Understandable,” Cousins replied, seemingly in agreement with the Suns owner.
Brooks is Having a Career Year with the Suns
Averaging career-high 21.2 points, 3.1 rebounds, and 1.7 assists per game this season, Brooks is the second-highest scorer in Phoenix.
Brooks’ dynamic with Booker has been a highlight for the Suns, easing them into games while they maintain momentum.
Brooks is also shooting 41.6% from the field, which is another career-high for him.
Having said that, the Brooks-Reaves swap might not be all that beneficial for either team. While Brooks is coming into his own, Reaves is a better two-way player. One also can’t look past James and Brooks, who might not team up together.
The Suns, though, are doing just fine without a trade for now.
Ranked seventh in the West, the Suns will face the Memphis Grizzlies for their next game on Wednesday, Jan. 7.
