Every few years, NBA icons like Stephen Curry and LeBron James pass the mantle on to younger players who’ve established themselves as the ‘next big thing’ in the league. Of course, not every player stands the test of time; some stand out more than others.
Dallas Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg, the No. 1 draft pick this year, has drawn ample attention this year. And while Flagg has a long way to go, even Curry can’t deny his impressive form as a rookie.

Stephen Curry Shared a Candid Take on Mavericks’ Cooper Flagg
The Golden State Warriors celebrated Christmas by beating the Mavericks 126-116 and extending their record to 16-15. While Curry led his team with 23 points, Flagg ended the game with a team-high 27 points. And though the rookie couldn’t lead his team to victory, fans sang praises about Flagg’s game.
According to many, Flagg is the next big thing in the NBA. Curry, speaking to the team postgame, was confident about Flagg’s performance. He stated that it’s no surprise that the Duke graduate was a No. 1 pick, nor is he surprised by how Flagg has been playing.
“Future’s bright,” Curry said. “[He’s playing] way beyong his years. Just his basketball IQ, you can tell. That’s a journey you want to stay locked in on. He’s going to be around for a long time.”
In another interview, Curry zeroed in on Flagg taking over eventually, content that the NBA will be in good hands. “Just a true hooper. Competitor. You forget how young he is — just his presence out there on the court,” Curry explained after the game. “So, the future is bright. I’m glad he got this experience in his first year to understand what the bright lights feel like. The league is in good hands.”
That being said, this isn’t the first time Curry has hyped Flagg or his talent. Of course, this is also because Flagg is a veteran of Curry Camp. Right after the Mavericks picked Flagg as their obvious No. 1 pick, Curry shared an image congratulating him.
“Curry Camp -> NBA. Let’s get it! @cooper_flagg,” Curry wrote in his IG caption.
Despite being troubled with a few injuries, Curry has been averaging 28.4 points, 4.2 rebounds, and 4.3 assists while shooting 46.7% from the ground. Flagg, slowly gaining momentum, is averaging 19.4 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 3.8 assists while shooting 49.3% from the field.
