Stephen A. Smith States LeBron James Is Making the ‘Greatest Case’ For the NBA GOAT Debate Despite Scoring Struggles

Stephen A. Smith states LeBron James is making the greatest case for the GOAT debate despite scoring struggles for the Lakers.

It is evident that LeBron James is showing signs of aging. While he remains capable of producing strong numbers across the board at times, the reality is that he is no longer in his prime.

James has seemingly accepted his role as the Los Angeles Lakers’ third option, yielding to Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves. Despite his decline, sports analyst Stephen A. Smith explained why James continues to merit inclusion in the GOAT debate.

Stephen A. Smith Acknowledges LeBron James’ Versatility as a Form of Greatness

James and Smith have had disagreements in the past, most recently in early 2025 when Smith criticized Bronny James. Although the two have not fully reconciled, they have agreed to move forward from the issue.

In a recent episode of “First Take,” Smith praised James’ performance this season despite the decline in his statistical output. Smith noted that James’ reduced numbers were largely the result of deferring to Dončić and Reaves.

Smith expressed admiration for James’ versatility as both a leader and a teammate, emphasizing that James continues to find ways to contribute without seeking the spotlight. He argued that these qualities strengthen James’ case in the GOAT debate.

“Wait a minute, this is LeBron James. What the hell are we talking about here?” Smith said. “This man is 41 years of age. He’s in his 23rd season. He’s been to 10 NBA Finals. He’s a four-time champion and a four-time league MVP. He’s a basketball savant. If anybody can figure it out, it’s going to be him.

“Obviously, Michael Jordan is my GOAT. Damn it, that ain’t changing. But having said all of that, the greatest case for LeBron James being the GOAT, in my opinion, is being made by him this year. He looks absolutely fantastic. … The reality is, he finds a multitude of ways to beat you. … He’s doing whatever it takes in order for the Lakers to win basketball games.”

Looking at James’ numbers, while they may be relatively low compared to his previous seasons, they remain solid and efficient enough to help his team win. James is averaging 21.0 points, 6.9 assists, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.1 steals.

He has said he is willing to defer to younger teammates and will continue to do everything within his capability to fill gaps and help the Lakers succeed.
