Spurs Bolster Supporting Cast for Victor Wembanyama With Prototypical 3-and-D Wing in NBA Draft

The San Antonio Spurs added to their young core in the 2025 NBA Draft, selecting Arizona wing Carter Bryant with the 14th overall pick.

The 2024-25 season was a tough one for the San Antonio Spurs. The team finished 13th in the Western Conference with a 34-48 record, and legendary head coach Gregg Popovich stepped down after the season.

The Spurs now have the golden opportunity to add quality talent around franchise cornerstone Victor Wembanyama in the first round of the 2025 NBA Draft. They took big-name guard Dylan Harper with the second overall pick and decided on a high-ceiling wing at No. 14.

Spurs Add Wing Depth With Arizona’s Carter Bryant

Wembanyama took a huge step forward last season, leading the team in points, rebounds, and blocks per game. The second-year star averaged 24.3 points, 11.0 rebounds, and led the NBA with 3.8 blocks. He was also named to the All-Star game for the first time.

However, his season was cut short after he was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his shoulder in mid-February. The Spurs needed an injection of talent to start the new era without Popovich roaming the sidelines. They added the highly rated Harper and took Arizona’s Carter Bryant with the 14th overall pick.

Bryant was not overly productive in his one year at Arizona, posting 6.5 points, 4.1 rebounds, 1.0 assists, and 0.9 steals in just under 20 minutes per game. However, his NBA-ready traits were clear, including shooting 37.1% from three-point range on 3.5 attempts per game.

Bryant’s size and athleticism make him an intriguing prospect to add to San Antonio’s already long defense with Wembanyama. Measuring 6’6 1/2″ with a 6’11 3/4″ wingspan at the 2025 NBA Combine, Bryant could develop into a quality 3-and-D wing.

PFSN’s Brandon Austin wrote, “He [Bryant] can do a bit of everything, and his shooting touch (37.1% from 3) will be valuable. Victor Wembanyama’s perimeter usage is an asset, but with Harper and now Bryant added, it would appear that San Antonio will be shifting his role.

“Given his instincts around the rim and the attacking nature of [Stephon] Castle/De’Aaron Fox, the Spurs are built to handle any defense on any night with an impressive depth of playmakers who complement each other very nicely.”

Fox averaged 19.3 points in 17 games after being traded from the Sacramento Kings at the deadline. Castle was third on the team with 4.1 assists in 81 games and is slated for a larger role after Chris Paul’s departure. Harper and Bryant are two solid additions to San Antonio’s up-and-coming roster. The Spurs still hold the 38th overall pick and have already had a successful draft.
