Miami Heat head coach Erik Spoelstra noted that Bam Adebayo and Victor Wembanyama are vastly different players, but they share one similarity: they are offensively strong across the court. The Miami Heat faced the Western Conference’s No. 2 team, the San Antonio Spurs, and suffered a 111-136 loss on Monday night.

Erik Spoelstra Compares Bam Adebayo and Victor Wembanyama
Spoelstra shared his insight into a similarity between the two players, something not everyone can easily spot. He highlighted that when preparing to face each other, both players must be ready to counter offense from all areas of the floor.
Wembanyama and Adebayo are not similar players, as one operates primarily as a paint anchor while the other thrives on versatility and perimeter defense. The Spurs star, one of the best rim protectors in the league, relies on length, finesse, and skill, supported by his enormous wingspan, whereas the Heat standout excels through strength, agility, and toughness.
“[Wembanyama] is their leading scorer, and so he’s doing it all over the floor. Obviously, a totally different player than Bam [Adebayo], but that’s probably similar when you’re preparing for Bam offensively, all over the floor, handling, screening, playing at the three-point line, playing in the post, playing off of drives, they screen for him.”

The 22-year-old Spurs player has graced the MVP favorites roster and trails just the favorite Shai Gilgeous-Alexander. He has even argued that his defense, helping the Spurs to the second-best record in the West, and his offensive skill set were enough to merit serious consideration in the MVP race. SGA and Wembanyama are the top players on the leaderboard.
On the other hand, Adebayo, the anchor for the Miami Heat this season, made history with an 83-point performance against the Washington Wizards on March 10, 2026. His effort surpassed Kobe Bryant’s 81-point feat, set in 2006. Adebayo now sits second behind Wilt Chamberlain, who holds the record with 100 points.
However, Adebayo, a three-time NBA All-Star, received significant backlash for his historic performance. Many believed the feat was not entirely authentic, claiming that his teammates deliberately fed him the ball to boost his scoring tally, as his 36 made free throws on 43 attempts also set records, compared to the 20 free throws Bryant made in his 81-point game.
Amid the growing backlash, Spoelstra firmly stated that he would not apologize to anyone and had delegated the responsibility to Adebayo to score, given that several players were sidelined by injuries.
