Skip Bayless Argues Luka Dončić Is a ‘Poor 3-Point Shooter,’ Calls Out Lakers Star’s Efficiency

Skip Bayless criticized Luka Dončić on Gil's Arena, arguing the Lakers star is a "poor" shooter whose style is "selfish."

Luka Dončić is currently putting together one of the most prolific scoring seasons in the history of the sport. The Los Angeles Lakers superstar leads the NBA in scoring at 33.4 points per game and has the purple and gold sitting firmly in the No. 3 seed in the Western Conference.

While he has been a triple-double machine since arriving in Los Angeles via trade from the Dallas Mavericks last year, not everyone is convinced that his high-volume approach is the right path to a championship.

Skip Bayless Questions Luka Dončić’s Scoring Efficiency

Despite the Lakers’ 46-26 record and a recent 9-game winning streak, Skip Bayless remains the loudest skeptic of the Slovenian’s style of play. During an appearance on “Gil’s Arena,” Bayless argued that the sheer volume of shots Dončić takes masks a deeper problem with his efficiency.

He pointed specifically to the numbers at the perimeter and the charity stripe to suggest that Dončić is actually hurting the team by dominating the ball.

“Because from three, he’s 36%, which is, if you look at it, that ranks 96th in the league,” Bayless said. “So, he’s taking the most three-point shots, and he’s 96th in making those shots. And from the free-throw line, he takes the most free throws, and he’s 86th in making free throws, because he is a 70% free throw shooter.

“So, he’s, by superstar standards, a poor 3-point shooter and a poor free-throw shooter. But he’s leading the league and attempts and attempts. … The inefficiency of it, the selfishness of it, it’s hard for me to watch and embrace.”

The critique highlights the central debate surrounding the Lakers this season. While the team is winning, Bayless contends that a superstar who takes nearly 11 3-pointers per game and more than 10 free throws should be more accurate. By his estimation, the raw point totals are inflated by a usage rate that prevents the rest of the roster from finding rhythm.

This is not the first time Bayless has targeted Dončić’s efficiency. In December 2025, after a disappointing loss to the Detroit Pistons, Bayless took to social media to blast what he called the “killer inefficiency” of Dončić.

During that game, Dončić finished with 30 points but committed eight turnovers and shot just 3-of-11 from beyond the arc. Bayless posted at the time that it was simply “hard to overcome Luka,” even asking, “You miss this, Dallas???”

The Context Behind Dončić’s Numbers and Bayless’s Critique

The statistical reality is more nuanced than the “poor shooter” label suggests. While his 36.4% mark from 3-point range does not put him in the elite tier of marksmen like Steph Curry or Tyrese Maxey, the difficulty of his attempts is significantly higher than the league average.

Dončić creates almost all of his own looks, often settling for contested step-back jumpers late in the shot clock. When looking at True Shooting percentage, which accounts for the value of 3-pointers and free throws, Dončić sits at a respectable 61.8%.

That number is well above the league average and suggests that his scoring is actually highly efficient when adjusted for the massive load he carries

The argument that Dončić is a poor free-throw shooter also requires context. While he is shooting 77.2% from the line for the season, he is getting there more than anyone else in the league.

The sheer pressure he puts on opposing defenses by attempting 10.3 free throws per game (which directly reflects the number of fouls he draws) creates an interior gravity that opens up the floor for teammates like Austin Reaves and Rui Hachimura.

Lakers coach JJ Redick has consistently defended his star, noting that the offense is designed to maximize the attention Dončić draws. The criticism regarding turnovers is more grounded in fact, as Dončić currently leads the NBA with 4.0 turnovers per game.

Yet, for a player who averages 8.4 assists and leads the league in points produced, most analysts view those mistakes as the necessary tax for a high-octane offense.

Bayless has spent the better part of the last two years suggesting that the Lakers’ success is happening in spite of Dončić rather than because of him.

In January 2026, he even argued that Dončić did not deserve MVP consideration, citing games in which LeBron James had to carry the load while Dončić struggled from the field.

“Lakers survive sub-.500 Memphis thanks mostly to LeBron’s 12 of 18, winning in spite of Luka’s 1-7 from 3 (31% for yr on NBA’s 2nd most attempts) and increasing his league-leading turnovers with 6 more. Yet fans chant MVP???” Bayless said earlier this year.

As the playoffs approach, the Lakers appear to be a legitimate contender to emerge from the West. Whether Dončić’s efficiency holds up under the physical pressure of a 7-game series will likely determine the validity of Bayless’s long-standing campaign against him.

For now, the Lakers seem perfectly content to live with the occasional off-night from deep as long as it comes with the scoring title and a top-3 seed.
