Kevin Durant’s trade saga could be resolved before June 25. Though nothing is guaranteed, it’s essential that any talks involving him wrap up before the 2025 NBA Draft. Once the draft begins, attention will shift to the picks themselves, which could affect Durant’s trade value.
Speaking of the draft, most insiders aren’t too concerned about the top ten picks. That’s because the final mock drafts from multiple sources have shown similar projections. Cooper Flagg is widely expected to go No. 1 overall pick. The San Antonio Spurs, who hold the No. 2 pick, may also be open to moving despite ongoing trade buzz. ESPN’s Shams Charania believes the Spurs might not hold on to that pick for long.
Spurs Unlikely to Trade No. 2 Pick, Says Shams Charania Amid Draft Buzz
The 2025 NBA Draft is approaching, and many are discussing what the Spurs will do with their No. 2 pick. Some believe the team might trade it to get a superstar like Durant since they are reportedly one of Durant’s favorite choices.
But Charania offered a more grounded perspective. He thinks the Spurs will probably keep the pick. He explained, “I think we’re going to see a ton of draft pick movement. If I had to vouch it for the Spurs, I think they probably keep that number two pick versus not.”
The NBA insider said that the Spurs will get many calls from teams picking between No. 3 and No. 8. But he also made it clear that a top-three draft pick doesn’t get traded easily. He explained, “It always takes a massive offer to come off it.” So, they are not in a rush to trade their pick.
Most experts believe the Spurs will choose Rutgers guard Dylan Harper with the No. 2 pick. If that happens, he will join Victor Wembanyama and De’Aaron Fox to form a strong and exciting young trio. Even though there are rumors about trading for big stars like Durant, the Spurs seem focused on building their team through the draft.
Contrary to recent speculation, the Spurs are “locked in” on Dylan Harper with the No. 2 pick, per league contacts.

Now, talking about Durant from a trade point of view, he is currently 8th on the NBA’s all-time scoring list, with a career average of 27.1 points per game. Last season, he averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds, and 4.2 assists per game.
However, because of his age and injury history, he is not a future-proof player. So, trading the No. 2 pick to trade him could be a perilous move, which Charania thinks the Spurs officials are not ready for right now.
