NBA Champion Boldly Compares Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to Michael Jordan, Wilt Chamberlain

A former NBA champion boldly categorized Shai Gilgeous-Alexander to basketball legends Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander looks to be on his way to winning his second consecutive MVP award. Last season, Gilgeous-Alexander was on top of the NBA world after winning his first MVP award and leading the Oklahoma City Thunder to their first NBA title as an OKC franchise.

Because of the way he has performed last year and this season, a former NBA champion has boldly compared Gilgeous-Alexander to basketball legends Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Stats up to Par With Michael Jordan and Wilt Chamberlain

Former NBA champion Richard Jefferson recently brought up why Gilgeous-Alexander is now comparable to Jordan and Chamberlain. While he’s only playing in his eighth NBA season, SGA has already put up stats on par with those of Jordan and Chamberlain.

In a recent episode of “NBA on ESPN”, Jefferson highlighted SGA’s statistics, which no other basketball legend has achieved except Jordan and Chamberlain. Gilgeous-Alexander, so far, has averaged at least 30.0 points per game while shooting at least 50% from the field in four consecutive seasons.

“You got four straight seasons with 30 points a game at 50% (shooting),” Jefferson brought up. “Do you know who else has done that? Michael Jordan. Do you know who else has done that? Wilt Chamberlain. Whenever you’re in the same category as Wilt Chamberlain and Michael Jordan, that is elite of elite.”

“We need to start praising, watching, you don’t even have to be a basketball fan to appreciate what (Shai Gilgeous-Alexander) is doing,” Jefferson added. “He’s putting himself at next-level category.”

Looking at Gilgeous-Alexander’s numbers this season, he has been nothing short of dominant. He’s currently averaging 31.8 points, 6.4 assists, 4.4 rebounds, and 1.4 steals. His efforts on the floor have helped the Thunder maintain their spot at the top of the Western Conference throughout the season. OKC has yet to fall in placement.

Currently, they are on a 3-game winning streak and look to keep that momentum against the Knicks tonight.

Meanwhile, for SGA, it’s worth noting that Victor Wembanyama occupies fourth place in the NBA MVP race. Given how the second-placed San Antonio Spurs are now only three games behind the Thunder, there’s a chance that Wemby could sneakily snatch the MVP award from Gilgeous-Alexander if he leads his team to the first seed in the 2026 NBA Playoffs.
