Reggie Miller Compares Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Scoring Streak to NBA Legends

The NBA on NBC’s roster of analysts boasts one of the most star-studded lineups of former players. Aside from Miller, their team also features Tracy McGrady, Carmelo Anthony, Vince Carter, and Jamal Crawford.

However, as Miller pointed out, no one on that list of former NBA stars came close to accomplishing what Gilgeous-Alexander is doing now.

“People need to understand how hard it is to score in an NBA game, let alone 20 points in 128 consecutive games,” Miller said. Afterward, he said he had to do a deep dive into the longest 20-point game streak that he and his peers achieved during their playing days.

“Starting with Jamal, Jamal was the lowest. Again, he was a three-time Sixth Man of the Year award winner so that’s to be expected. So he had eight consecutive games. I was second, only 14 consecutive games.”

Then, he shared that Carter reached 23, Anthony had 31, and McGrady had the most with 45.

Interestingly, two of the players Miller mentioned won the NBA scoring title during their careers. Anthony did it once after he averaged 28.7 points per game in 2012-13.

McGrady did it twice in consecutive seasons. In 2002-03, he finished with 32.1 ppg, and in 2003-04, he averaged 28.0. Still, neither came close to what Gilgeous-Alexander is doing now.

Gilgeous-Alexander’s streak of games with 20 or more points scored now sits at 135 after Sunday’s Oklahoma City Thunder vs. New York Knicks game. Gilgeous-Alexander scored a team-high 30 points, helping the team to a 111-100 victory.

Despite the streak, he isn’t leading the league in points per game this season. He is averaging 31.5 points per game, which is only good enough for second place. He is trailing only Luka Dončić, who is averaging 33.6 per game.

With seven more games left on the Thunder’s schedule, Gilgeous-Alexander still has a chance to overtake Dončić. However, that’s easier said than done, as the Los Angeles Lakers star is also in the midst of putting up huge scoring numbers.
