Jaylen Brown’s blockbuster move to the Philadelphia 76ers emerged as one of the most surprising trades of the offseason.
While the Boston Celtics’ front office presented the decision as a business move, one NBA analyst believes there was a deeper reason behind the franchise moving on from its longtime star.
Jaylen Brown’s Blockbuster 76ers Trade Was More Than a Business Move
For years, Brown established himself as one of the Celtics’ most important players alongside Jayson Tatum. Last season, with Tatum appearing in only 16 regular-season games while recovering from a ruptured Achilles tendon, Brown stepped into an even larger leadership role and carried much of the responsibility for the Celtics.
The former Celtics star posted a career-best 28.7 points per game while finishing sixth in MVP voting. Although Boston reached the playoffs, their postseason run came to an end at the hands of Brown’s current team, the 76ers.
However, Brown once again produced at a high level against Philadelphia, averaging 25.7 points during the first round of the playoffs.
So when the opportunity arose, the Sixers wasted no time in aggressively pursuing the deal, acquiring Brown in exchange for Paul George and a package of draft picks.
While Brown’s outstanding season showed his leadership, scoring ability, and athleticism, Boston Globe National’s Gary Washburn argued that the Celtics’ first-round collapse against Philadelphia altered the franchise’s short-term outlook.
“Losing that game seven and losing in the first round and losing to the seven seed and losing the series where you had control and losing and watching Joel Embiid turn into Prime Embiid right in the middle,” Washburn said.
“All of what happened in those last 3 games changed the franchise short-term…and they decided they were going to trade Jaylen Brown.”

“Watching Paul George turn to Indiana Paul George and all of what happened in those last three games changed the franchise in terms of the short term. And they decided they were going to trade Jaylen Brown.”
Tatum remained sidelined in Game 7 against the 76ers, once again leaving Brown to shoulder the Celtics’ leadership responsibilities. He responded with 33 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists, but the Sixers ultimately prevailed behind standout performances from Embiid and Tyrese Maxey.
Brown’s trade came shortly after Philadelphia knocked Boston out in the first round of the playoffs. The move ended his 10-year tenure with the Celtics, during which he won the 2024 NBA Finals MVP award.
Brown has embraced a fresh beginning with the 76ers, and the veteran forward appears fully committed to his new team, already making the rounds throughout Philadelphia as he adjusts to his surroundings.
