Pelicans Star Zion Williamson Announces Major Update On Foot Injury

New Orleans Pelicans star Zion Williamson was inactive for his team's recent game. Find out what that means for his future

As the New Orleans Pelicans find themselves at the bottom of the Western Conference, fans are dealing with the all-too-familiar sight of star Zion Williamson on the bench in street clothes. The former All-Star missed the Pelicans’ recent game against the Boston Celtics and offered more insight into his future and his latest setback.

What Did Zion Williamson Reveal About His Current Status?

Williamson sat out of the Pelicans’ 122-90 loss to the Celtics while dealing with a left foot bone contusion. Williamson clarified his situation while speaking to the media, saying, “Right now we’re in a day to day thing, but nothing major. Nothing that’s going to keep me out a long time.”

The injury occurred on a putback dunk against the San Antonio Spurs. Williamson explained, “I landed on someone’s foot and the side of my foot just banged the ground. The pain level didn’t really pick up until a day or two days later.”

For many Pelicans fans, Williamson sitting out games for even minor injuries is a source of concern and frustration. He has had multiple seasons shortened due to various ailments, including the 2024-25 season, when he only played in 30 games while dealing with hamstring and lower back pain. That extended absence was especially disappointing because it followed a career-high 70 games played during the 2023-2024 season.

Through two games this season, Williamson is averaging 27 points, 9.5 rebounds, and six assists, once again flashing his elite offensive potential. That dominance only adds to the frustration for fans who want to see him get through a full season healthy and playing well.

The team’s front office has also seen significant changes. With the Pelicans hiring Joe Dumars as the new Head of Basketball Operations this past April, there was heavy speculation that the team might look to trade its former first overall pick. However, Dumars quickly shot down those trade rumors, stating he was there to hold Williamson accountable.

The unique structure of Williamson’s contract adds another layer to the situation. His guaranteed money is directly tied to his weight and the number of games he plays, creating a year-to-year arrangement with the team. For now, the immediate focus is simply on getting Williamson back on the court, as the Pelicans are currently the only winless team in the Western Conference.

New Orleans does have other quality players on the roster, including wings Trey Murphy III and Herbert Jones, intriguing rookies like guard Jeremiah Fears and center Derik Queen, and a wild card in Jordan Poole. It’s an interesting mix around Williamson, but if he has another injury-filled season, the team is headed straight for the lottery again.
