The Trey Murphy III trade rumors have picked up steam in recent weeks. The Los Angeles Lakers, Golden State Warriors, and Denver Nuggets have all reportedly shown interest in the New Orleans Pelicans forward. He’s seen as the missing piece for each of these teams to take the next step. But Joe Dumars, the new executive vice president of basketball operations for the Pelicans, is holding firm.
Dumars settling into his new role has made it even harder for teams to land Murphy. Some sources have even called the Pelicans’ asking price “ridiculous.” A team trying to rebuild sees Murphy as a core asset and is expected to offer serious value to pry him away.
Pricing Trey Murphy III Away From the Pelicans Proves Challenging
A steady two-way wing, Murphy gives teams offensive consistency and energy on defense. According to ClutchPoints, rival executives are trying to “sell” Dumars on the idea of trading Murphy for draft capital after the Pelicans gave up picks in trades for CJ McCollum, Dejounte Murray, and Devonte’ Graham. Despite the buzz, there hasn’t been strong movement toward a deal.
Rumors say that rival teams are willing to offer first- and second-round picks, but the Pelicans are asking for more. With the Zion Williamson era on shaky ground, Murphy could either help turn things around or bring in the star power they need through a trade.
The rebuilding Pelicans could land some valuable draft picks if they decide to move him.
New Orleans is said to be seeking a proven veteran with playoff experience, a strong young prospect, and multiple first-rounders in return. With all the interest swirling around Murphy, it’s possible this small forward is viewed as a priceless asset.
But his health remains a key concern. He missed most of last season with a torn labrum in his right shoulder. The big question is whether he can stay healthy.
Murphy Could Be the Final Piece for Multiple Franchises
Murphy could slot right into the Warriors’ system, where they need a secondary playmaker and a solid wing. In the 2022–23 season, Murphy nearly became the youngest player to post a 50/40/90 shooting split in NBA history.
At age 22, he shot 48.4% from the field, 40.6% from 3-point range, and 90.5% from the free-throw line. He posted those numbers in 75 games with the Pelicans. The small forward also made an impact this season before the injury, averaging 21.2 points per game, though his 3-point shooting dropped to 36.1%.
If he joins the Warriors, they’d get a 6’8″, 206-pound forward who brings floor spacing and shooting. The Lakers could use his size, too, especially with Luka Dončić and LeBron James looking for another piece to complete the puzzle. The Nuggets would also benefit from adding him.
Murphy should be busy this offseason, with several teams circling as they try to land one of the league’s most promising young wings.
