So, we’re almost in the middle of the NBA Finals best-of-seven series. The Indiana Pacers are testing the nerves of their opponents after improving their record to 2-1 in Game 3. But for those of us who have seen all three matches of the Finals, we know this journey hasn’t been smooth at all.
Additionally, the Pacers’ unsung hero, Tyrese Haliburton, also faced criticism due to his mediocre performance in Game 2. Rick Carlisle, the head coach, now highlights how difficult the road ahead still is. He said the team must overcome a tough challenge to win their first NBA championship.
Rick Carlisle Breaks Down the Challenge Standing Between Pacers and NBA Title
Talking about the Pacers’ head coach, he has had a highly successful NBA career in every role he’s taken on. He’s reached the Finals as a player, an assistant coach, and now also as a head coach.
Right now, his main priority is leading the Indiana Pacers. He’s focused on developing strategies to strengthen the team’s performance and maintain consistent scoring. When asked about the challenge that lies ahead on their path to a championship with a 2-1 lead, he said:
“That’s the challenge before us right now, is to maintain. It’s got to be a killer edge to beat these guys. We’re going to be an underdog in every game in this series,” Carlisle said, referencing the betting odds that have consistently favored the Thunder.
“It was 10.5 [points] in the first two games, 5.5 last night, and then tomorrow. It’s a daunting challenge. Anything less than a total-grit mindset, and we just don’t have a chance.”
We understand why Carlisle is using the underdog story—it pushes his team to work harder. He knows this mindset brings out their best. The Pacers have already surprised many people. They stole Game 1 on the road with grit and heart. Every single person was on the edge of their seat.
Then in Game 3, they fought back again. Bennedict Mathurin and T.J. McConnell stepped up with big performances. He wants them to believe they belong here—and to keep proving it every game.
“This is no time to be popping champagne,” he said earlier in the series. “When you get to this point of the season, it’s two teams and one goal. It becomes an all-or-nothing thing.”
To be honest, it’s really important because their opponents have the best defensive rating in the NBA this season. Carlisle knows Indiana can’t afford to lose focus. With so much load on the line, the team must stay sharp and keep their edge. Any mental slip could cost them the game.

Game 4 is just around the corner, and the Pacers are ready to face it head-on. They know it won’t be easy, but they’re not backing down. Coach Carlisle keeps the message simple and strong. Respect your opponent. Trust the hard work. And don’t let up, not for a second.
