LeBron James’ potential return to the Cleveland Cavaliers is perhaps the most interesting free agency scenario for the four-time MVP. However, James’ potential fit with the Cavaliers has drawn questions from some NBA insiders and former players.

Late last month, James announced his decision not to return to the Lakers. When the 22-time NBA All-Star bid farewell to Hollywood, James Harden also declined his $42.3 million player option, giving the Cavaliers some wriggle room to give James a potential homecoming.
The Cavs and Harden reportedly want to reunite, but their talks have been put on hold until the James sweepstakes are settled.
While some see the NBA’s all-time scoring king returning to his roots, others are advising him to stay away from the franchise that drafted him in 2003.
One Cleveland-based NBA analyst shared his thoughts on why he is against a James-Cavs reunion.
“They’re worried defensively. That, I think, is the overarching worry that I think a lot of people have in the construct of LeBron James coming to the Cavs…between LeBron, Harden, and Donovan Mitchell. … He’s gonna have to do work on that end that he hasn’t had to in years,” 92.3 The Fan Cleveland host Jonathan Peterlin said.

Peterlin’s co-host, Nick Wilson, responded:
“There’s gonna be things about James (Harden) that annoy LeBron. … (Harden) just lets the guy by him. … I think that is gonna piss LeBron off, especially in the playoffs.”
No less than James’ former Cavaliers teammate, Iman Shumpert, has urged the 41-year-old forward not to return to Ohio. Shumpert said in his “Shump Street” podcast on Tuesday that the all-time great superstar “can’t go to Cleveland trying to be happy about a win because you’re not gonna win there.”
Shumpert emphasized that should James go that route, he would be enjoying “a legacy tour” but not a championship. For the former-player-turned-podcaster, the Cavaliers’ underwhelming playoff performance against the New York Knicks should serve as a strong warning about the Cavs.
Hilariously, Shumpert added that James could turn on his “GM mode” and start “shipping (expletive)” once he gets a closer look at the Cavaliers’ deficiencies.

Cleveland’s season ended in the 2026 Eastern Conference finals, where it was swept by New York. Mitchell and Harden received much of the blame after the Knicks routinely exposed them on defense.
For many in the NBA community, James’ aging legs aren’t the answer to Cleveland’s defensive woes with both Mitchell and Harden around.
The four-time NBA Finals MVP promised on Thursday that he would announce his decision soon. Until then, the back-and-forth about where his best fit would be would continue to dominate the free agency period.
