‘You’re Not Gonna Beg Your Way to a Title’ — 3-Time NBA Champion Gets Blunt on ‘The Next Step’ of Luka Dončić’s ‘Evolution’

A three-time NBA champion urges Luka Dončić to 'stop whining' to officials in order for the Lakers to reach their ceiling.

As frustration mounts with Luka Dončić’s persistent gripes about officiating, three-time NBA champion Udonis Haslem is ready to see the Los Angeles Lakers superstar make a major change.

On Thursday, the Miami Heat icon bluntly weighed in on how Dončić can overcome his divisive habit and take the “next step” as a championship-caliber franchise player.

Udonis Haslem Urges Luka Dončić To ‘Stop Whining’ to Referees in Order for Lakers To Reach Ceiling

Dončić has garnered a reputation for frequently taking issue with officiating calls throughout his eight-year career. However, the narrative has ramped up this season as the six-time All-Star’s technical fouls have piled up, with his antics increasingly wearing on fans and analysts alike.

Ahead of LA’s Thursday road matchup against the Denver Nuggets, Haslem attributed the aspiring Western Conference contender’s struggles against elite competition to Dončić’s on-court demeanor.

“When we talk about the Lakers not being able to compete at a high level with the good teams, the good teams have two things: They have good habits, and they have guys that have bought into the system and everything that’s going on. When I look at the Lakers — and this takes nothing away from Luka as a great player — the next step of the evolution of Luka Dončić: stop whining,” Haslem said.

“Stop complaining to the refs. You’re not gonna beg your way to a title. You’re not gonna cry your way to a championship. As great of a player as you are, you are taking away from your game when you’re focusing so much energy and effort complaining to the refs.”

Haslem went on to liken the 27-year-old’s situation to that of Boston Celtics superstar forward Jayson Tatum before he captured his first title in 2024.

“I remember this with a young Jayson Tatum when we were in those battles with the Boston Celtics,” Haslem recalled. “As soon as he started complaining to the refs, I would tell our young guys, ‘Now we got him,’ because it’s about everything else besides the game.

“With these great players that you’re trying to stop, if you can knock these guys off their game for three, four minutes, just to focus on anything else, that’s all the advantage you need.”

Following Haslem’s advice, Dončić proceeded to pick up his 15th technical foul of the season in LA’s 120-113 loss to Denver, moving him one away from an automatic one-game suspension with 20 contests remaining.

As such, the NBA’s leading scorer (32.3 points per game) is running out of time to right the ship with his behavior as the sixth-seeded Lakers (37-25) seek to fortify their playoff positioning.
