‘Not an Easy Decision’ – Bucks HC Taylor Jenkins Details Why Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade Was ‘A Lengthy Process’

Bucks head coach Taylor Jenkins details the difficult process behind trading franchise icon Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat for a massive draft haul.

The Milwaukee Bucks ultimately sent two-time MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat in a blockbuster trade that very well shifted the power in the East. The July transaction ended months of speculation and officially closed a historic chapter of basketball in Wisconsin, with the Bucks front office pulling the trigger on a rebuild.

The decision, however, was far from easy, as Milwaukee’s head coach, Taylor Jenkins, continues to assert.

Bucks’ Taylor Jenkins Details ‘Difficult’ Giannis Antetokounmpo Trade to Miami

Milwaukee shipped Antetokounmpo and veteran forward Bobby Portis to South Beach. In return, the Bucks acquired Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., and Kasparas Jakucionis.

Miami also sent the 2026 No. 13 overall pick (Nate Ament), unprotected first-round picks in 2031 and 2033, a 2030 pick swap, and a 2033 second-round pick.

Antetokounmpo leaves Milwaukee with one of the most decorated resumes in basketball history, capturing MVP awards in 2019 and 2020. He also secured the Defensive Player of the Year trophy and earned 10 All-Star nods over his tenure.

He delivered the Bucks their first championship in 50 years and took home Finals MVP honors in 2021. Even during a fractured final season, the Greek Freak put up noteworthy production.

Antetokounmpo played just 36 games but averaged nearly 28 points and 10 rebounds while shooting 62% from the field.

After a dismal 32-50 record last season amid multiple controversies surrounding the Bucks’ franchise, the team opted to maximize his trade value.

Addressing the headline-making trade during an appearance on SiriusXM Radio recently, Jenkins opened up on the thought process behind it.

“Obviously a difficult decision,” Jenkins said. “I mean Giannis has meant so much not just to the organisation but to the city. But really trying to identify what did we really believed was the best pathway forward for the Bucks and also doing right what was best for Giannis.”

“Not an easy decision,” Jenkins continued. “We’re not gonna sit here and say ‘oh it’s easy it’s flipping a coin’ and this is gonna be something that’s going to be clear as day from day one.”

Detailing the grueling discussions held behind closed doors, Jenkins added, “It was a lengthy process. A lot of great conversations about where we’re at, where we wanna go. It’s not something that’s just gonna happen overnight.”

Meanwhile, the Heat are not finished building for the next season just yet.

And by the looks of it, Pat Riley is now shifting his focus toward 41-year-old free agent LeBron James, who informed the Los Angeles Lakers he will not return for a ninth season.

A return to Miami offers James a chance to close his career where he played his most efficient basketball, and a storyline the NBA community cannot wait to watch unfold.
