‘It’s Gonna Be OK’ — Nikola Jokić Breaks Silence on Polarizing Peyton Watson Trade, Addresses Nuggets’ 2026-27 Outlook

Nikola Jokić has broken his silence on the Peyton Watson trade and looked ahead to the Denver Nuggets’ 2026-27 season.

The Denver Nuggets sent Peyton Watson to the Cleveland Cavaliers in a five-team trade on Wednesday. Watson then agreed to a four-year, $88 million deal with Cleveland, ending his time in Denver after the trade.

With the move now complete, Nikola Jokić has opened up about the Nuggets losing Watson and shared his thoughts on the next season.

Serbia and France met in an exciting exhibition game in Belgrade on Thursday, with Jokić leading his nation to a 90-87 win at the Beogradska Arena. After the game, DNVR Nuggets host and Serbian NBA journalist Miroslav Ćuk asked Nikola Jokić about Peyton Watson’s move from Denver to Cleveland.

“I’m happy for Peyton, he deserved it,” Jokić said. “We will miss his energy and skill.”

The 31-year-old was then asked about his expectations for the upcoming season following Watson’s departure, but he was not looking that far ahead.

“I don’t think about season yet, we have to play this, but it’s gonna be OK,” he added.

The Serbian was also approached by BasketNews.rs for his thoughts on Watson leaving Denver, and again spoke highly of the young forward.

“I’m glad for Peyton. He’s a good man, really has a good energy, very good for the locker room. We will miss him for sure, but I can’t be unhappy for him, he’s a great guy,” he said.

Watson became an important part of Denver’s plans after putting together a strong campaign last season. He averaged 14.6 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists across 54 games.

The 23-year-old also shot 41.1% from three-point range, showing clear growth as an offensive player and giving the Nuggets another scoring option.

However, the Nuggets could feel his absence even more on defense. Watson’s size, speed, and athletic ability allowed him to defend both forward positions.

The California native has also built a strong name as a shot blocker, making his departure a notable loss for Denver’s defense.

For Cleveland, Watson offers the athleticism and upside the team needs on the wing. His ability to contribute on both ends could make him a strong fit alongside the Cavaliers’ core.

The Cavaliers could also benefit from his ability to grow into a bigger role, especially after showing progress during his time with Denver.

While the Nuggets will miss Watson’s production and energy, Jokić made it clear that he is happy to see his former teammate get a fresh opportunity. For now, Jokić is focused on the games ahead rather than looking too far into next season.
