Bronny James’ NBA future has come into question following news that his father and teammate LeBron James won’t be returning to the Los Angeles Lakers for Year 24 but will instead seek a new home in free agency.
Among those passionate about the subject was former Dallas Mavericks wing Theo Pinson, whose fiery remarks about Bronny’s rest-of-career outlook prompted a bold “bet” from FS1’s Nick Wright.
Bronny James’ NBA Future Sparks Heated Exchange
Bronny’s place in the league has been a point of contention since he was selected No. 55 in the 2024 NBA Draft, with many claiming he has benefited from nepotism at the expense of more deserving players.
While the 21-year-old defensive-minded guard took noticeable strides as a shooter and playmaker during his sophomore campaign, it has largely been assumed that his future is tied to LeBron.
Bronny’s $2.3 million salary for the 2026-27 campaign became guaranteed on Monday, a day before ESPN’s Shams Charania’s bombshell report that LeBron “informed the Lakers” that “he will play elsewhere” next season. While the 22-time All-Star’s highly anticipated next move is the NBA’s biggest storyline, some have turned their attention to Bronny’s fate, with Pinson not mincing words.
“I’m just telling you, especially from a [expletive] in my position, y’all could keep saying this ‘James’ thing, when [LeBron’s] gone, that means nothing to these GMs,” Pinson said on the “To The Baha” Podcast. “When’s LeBron’s gone, y’all think that’s still gonna carry weight?”
The ex-five-year NBA veteran clarified that he was speaking up for the countless hard-working players who never get a shot in the pros.
“I’m trying to defend the other [expletive] that’s just well as deserving,” Pinson explained. “… I’ve been in the G [League], bro. There’s a lot of guys doing that, and it don’t mean nothin’. I averaged 20 [points per game], it didn’t mean nothin’. Bronny can’t [expletive] with me. He never could. … Has he had a good game in the NBA?”

Pinson’s lengthy rant about Bronny’s worthiness of an NBA roster spot prompted Wright to weigh in on X.
“I’d bet good money that Bronny finishes his career with more NBA games played & points scored than Theo Pinson did,” Wright wrote.

The analyst’s blunt response seemingly further irked Pinson, who proceeded to compare his and Wright’s basketball chops.
“And I bet I’m better than you in everything … And the other thing is. The difference is I can talk about [this] because I played, and your dumb [expletive] didn’t,” Pinson fired back. “And you call people clowns when I wonder what you did in the game of basketball.”

To Wright’s point, Bronny has scored 184 career points through 69 games, while Pinson ended his career with 346 points over 127 outings. Depending on how the Lakers’ rotation shakes out or Bronny’s potential next landing spot, the 6-foot-2 guard could have a shot to prove Wright’s prediction correct at some point during the final two years of his rookie deal.
