Nets Asked Michael Porter Jr. To Be More Careful When Participating in Podcasts

Porter Jr. recently appeared on the “Ball In The Family Podcast.” The forward revealed that the Nets warned him about tapping certain topics when speaking his mind on podcasts. He also made a promise to be more aware of what he says.

“To be on the internet for anything else other than basketball, I feel like that’s a summertime thing,” Porter Jr. said. “Even the (Nets) organization, we just had conversations that they would appreciate it if I steered clear of certain topics. That’s why the WNBA thing is just a topic that’s kind of sensitive nowadays. I try to be just aware of that. … But for the most part, I’m chilling. I’m not trying to say nothing crazy no more.”

Over the summer, Porter Jr. made controversial remarks about WNBA players, women, and sports betting, and publicly criticized social media personality Andrew Tate. Since his arrival in Brooklyn, the Nets have made it clear that such behavior does not align with the organization’s standards and expectations for conduct.

Nets general manager Sean Marks expressed his thoughts on Porter Jr.’s behavior over the summer. Marks didn’t specify what exactly they discussed to keep his new forward in check; however, he understood that Porter Jr. is still adjusting to a new norm now that he is part of a new organization.

“Those conversations will remain internal. I think this is a new environment for him. A new market, new expectations, new roles, both on the court and in the locker room.”

Since joining his new team following his departure from the Denver Nuggets, Porter Jr. has emerged as a potential leader, both in presence and production. He is averaging 24.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 3.2 assists per game.

However, despite posting All-Star-caliber numbers, his chances of earning a selection this season may be hindered by the Nets’ struggles. Brooklyn holds a 2-12 record and sits in 13th place in the Eastern Conference.
