Michael Porter Jr.’s first offseason since being traded from the Denver Nuggets to the Brooklyn Nets has been overshadowed by controversial remarks, spanning podcast appearances and livestreams.
Still, Nets GM Sean Marks clarified how the organization responded to Porter Jr.’s controversial comments.
What Does Nets GM Sean Marks Think of Michael Porter Jr.’s Controversial Offseason Comments?
Porter Jr. has had a bizarre offseason, going on a podcast with controversial thoughts on various topics, including gambling, women, the WNBA, and even homosexuality — comments many would find distasteful. Marks made clear that his comments have been dealt with internally.
“Those conversations will remain internal. I think this is a new environment for him. A new market, new expectations, new roles, both on the court and in the locker room.”
In reference to the comments and expectations regarding the vast media market in New York, as opposed to Denver, as opposed to Denver, Marks said: “He knows where the organization stands on certain issues and topics…this market is a little different than where he was.”

Despite the offseason controversy, Porter Jr. has been recognized as a hard worker on and off the court. Nets officials trust these comments won’t be a problem moving forward.
Porter Jr. helped explain that he doesn’t spend much time on social media; it’s pure basketball for him. “Social media is not a big part of my life. Like, I think for me, basketball has been such a focal point of my entire life.”
He simply described his offseason ventures as a “hobby,” but once it’s time for him to be on the court, he’s all business, and basketball is his main focus.
“Some of the social media stuff and things this summer were a little bit of just a hobby. But during the season, I’m always basketball for me, my entire life, has been my focus and my where my attention goes to.”
Although those controversial comments aren’t the ideal way to ingratiate himself into his new surroundings in Brooklyn, the Nets still have high hopes that he’ll be a leader and help this young Nets team, which will have five first-round picks on its roster in a season expected to be a rebuilding year.
Porter will be expected not only to lead by example but also, along with Cam Thomas, to be the main scoring option on the team — a significant jump from being the tertiary scoring option in Denver. Nets officials hope Porter can step into that role and be the All-Star his talent level indicates he can be.
