LeBron James wasted no time making his presence felt to kick off the Los Angeles Lakers’ Tuesday home clash against the Cleveland Cavaliers.
Just five seconds after tipoff, the 22-time All-Star soared for a signature chase-down block on Cavaliers star Donovan Mitchell, leaving the NBA world in awe.

LeBron James Defies Father Time with Early Defensive Mastery vs. Cavaliers
James entered Tuesday listed as questionable due to left foot injury management, with many expecting the 41-year-old to get the night off on the second night of a back-to-back.
Instead, with rumors swirling about his future beyond his historic 23rd season, James was upgraded to available against his former team, setting the stage for a stunning highlight.
Upon Mitchell securing possession after the opening jump ball, the seven-time All-Star drove straight at Lakers superstar Luka Dončić for a layup. However, James swiftly came over to provide help defense, swatting Mitchell’s shot straight out of bounds with 11:55 remaining in the first quarter.
The four-time MVP’s recovery went viral on X, with many lauding his age-defying athleticism.

“Only 5 seconds after opening tip… LeBron CHASE-DOWN 🚫 The King wastes NO TIME,” the NBA’s official X account captioned the play.
“LeBron chase-down block on Spida immediately after tip-off 😭,” Bleacher Report reacted.
“LEBRON BLOCKED DONOVAN MITCHELL SECONDS INTO THE GAME 😭,” prominent Lakers fan account LakeShowYo posted.
“LEBRON STARTS THE GAME WITH A CHASE-DOWN BLOCK 🤯 THAT TOOK 5 SECONDS,” Lakers All Day Everyday remarked.
“Fastest chase-down block ever?” NBA personality MrBuckBuck pondered.
James has long since adopted the chase-down block as his signature defensive move. His clutch swat on Andre Iguodala in Game 7 of the 2016 NBA Finals against the Golden State Warriors serves as the most famous example.
James finished Tuesday’s first half with 9 points, 2 rebounds, 5 assists, 1 steal, and 1 block, shooting 3-for-6 (50%).
This came after he recorded his 125th career triple-double and third of the season during Monday’s 120-101 home win over the Washington Wizards. With his 21-point, 10-rebound, 12-assist performance, James extended his record as the oldest player to record a triple-double to 41 years and 90 days old.
Despite settling into a tertiary role, James continues to find ways to impact winning for the surging Lakers (49-26). They entered Tuesday sitting third in the Western Conference, having won 15 of their last 17 games.
