On May 26, the San Antonio Spurs suffered a (127-114) Game 5 loss against the Oklahoma City Thunder in the Western Conference Finals. Victor Wembanyama looked far from his usual dominant self as the eight-footer finished with 20 points and shot just 4-of-15.
For a player often praised for his “alien-like” abilities, it was a frustrating night that clearly weighed heavily on him. But still, what happened after the final buzzer created an even bigger conversation than the loss itself.

NBA’s Latest Action Against Victor Wembanyama
According to reports from “The Athletic,” while De’Aaron Fox was addressing reporters in the postgame interview, Wembanyama bypassed the media area entirely and headed straight for the team bus.
By doing so, he reportedly violated league media rules that require players to be available for postgame interviews. ESPN later reported that the NBA reviewed the incident and decided to issue Wembanyama only a warning rather than any formal punishment.

That response immediately sparked outrage across social media.
The NBA World’s Reaction After the Announcement
The NBA world pointed to a controversy from just weeks earlier, during Game 4 of the Western Conference semifinals. In that game, Wembanyama elbowed Naz Reid of the Minnesota Timberwolves. At the time, many expected the league to hand out some form of punishment.
But nothing was done. Now, because of that, several fans felt this latest warning was yet another example of the NBA protecting its rising superstar.
“He should be fined just like he should have been fined for his deliberate and dangerous elbow. Weird how the guy has won nothing yet they treat him like the golden child…. Already 8 feet tall and gets every advantage from the league,” wrote radio host Spike Eskin.
Whereas another influencer wrote, “He should be fined just like he should have been fined for his deliberate and dangerous elbow. Weird how the guy has won nothing yet they treat him like the golden child…. Already 8 feet tall and gets every advantage from the league.”

Ever since Wembanyama arrived as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2023 NBA Draft, he has been viewed as the future face of the league. This season especially, he has become one of the NBA’s biggest attractions.
Now his numbers back up the hype as Wembanyama averaged 25.0 points and 11.5 rebounds per game in the regular season. But despite his numbers, some fans believe the NBA has started overprotecting its newest global star.
“Silver gave his golden boy a slap on the wrist,” wrote one influencer.

While most of the NBA world was busy venting frustration at the league, not everyone kept the tone serious, as one user took a sharp comedic detour and brought Shai Gilgeous-Alexander into the conversation, who is well-known for drawing fouls.
“One more of those and Shai gets unlimited free throws!” wrote the user.

None of the users on X say that Wembanyama is a villain. He is just 22 years old, and his action clearly came from his frustration. But the NBA has rules, and those rules are supposed to apply equally.
When a league of this size allows its biggest stars to operate in a different way, it sets an example that is hard to walk back.
