For most NBA fans, the discussion surrounding the league’s top point guards starts with Shai Gilgeous-Alexander and Luka Dončić, with Jalen Brunson also in the mix following the New York Knicks’ historic 2026 title run.
However, according to Gilgeous-Alexander’s father, Vaughn, Dončić doesn’t even crack the top three. Instead, he settled on an unexpected choice for his No. 3 spot, leaving the NBA world perplexed.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander’s Dad Raises Eyebrows After Ranking Ja Morant Over Luka Dončić
Appearing on a livestream with N3on over the weekend, Gilgeous-Alexander’s father didn’t shy away from sharing his thoughts on the league’s top players.
When asked to name his top three current point guards, he unsurprisingly went with his son at No. 1 before throwing a curveball.
“I want to say Shai, of course. Get that out of the way. Cade Cunningham No. 2. … Who would I put at No. 3 point guard? A real, real, true point guard. Ja Morant,” Vaughn said. “I know you guys are all hating on Morant, but let him get back to his game and see what happens.”

While few took exception to Cunningham’s inclusion after spearheading a 60-win Detroit Pistons team, Morant making the cut over the league’s leading scorer elicited widespread disbelief.
Despite ending the season on the sidelines, Dončić (hamstring) secured his second scoring title in the 2025-26 campaign (33.5 points per game) on a 53-win Los Angeles Lakers squad.
Conversely, Morant suited up in just 20 contests for the lottery-bound Memphis Grizzlies, watching as his trade value steadily declined throughout the season. The high-flying two-time All-Star, who has dealt with his fair share of off-court issues, was ultimately shipped to the Portland Trail Blazers in exchange for salary filler (Jerami Grant and Kris Murray) this offseason, with Memphis seeking a fresh start with its young core.
As expected, the NBA community on X didn’t take too kindly to the rankings, with some refusing to take them seriously.

Morant is set to join a crowded Trail Blazers backcourt featuring veterans Jrue Holiday and Damian Lillard, along with up-and-comers Scoot Henderson and Shaedon Sharpe, presenting a tough avenue to reclaim his All-Star status.
Meanwhile, Dončić is the undisputed top dog on a revamped Lakers squad, giving him a clear path to another scoring crown.
Still, if Morant can stay relatively healthy and avoid off-court trouble, perhaps Gilgeous-Alexander’s father’s hot take won’t age quite as poorly as many are anticipating.
