On Thursday, the San Antonio Spurs fired broadcaster Jacob Tobey after his girlfriend reportedly hacked into his social media account and alleged that he was cheating on her with Loren Waters, the sister of Spurs guard Lindy Waters III.
Shortly after his firing was announced, Colin Cowherd chimed in, arguing that Tobey should consider hiring an attorney.
Colin Cowherd Advises Jacob Tobey to Consider Legal Action After Spurs Firing
Earlier in the week, Tobey’s girlfriend reportedly hacked into his Instagram account and posted a photo of her and Jacob with the caption, “This is my girlfriend of six years. But I cheated on her with Loren Waters. So feel free to continue following me if you really think I’m a good guy because I’m not. :)”
Tobey deleted the post, but the damage was done. The cheating scandal went viral on multiple social media platforms, and the Spurs ultimately decided to cut ties with Tobey on Thursday.
On “The Herd With Colin Cowherd,” Cowherd made his feelings clear on the situation.
“I did learn something new today, that you can get fired in America for cheating on your girlfriend,” Cowherd said. “I had no idea that was legal. You can get fired in America for cheating on, not your wife, your girlfriend. Feels like he should hire an attorney. That is a crazy story.”

Tobey had been working for the Spurs as a broadcaster since 2024 after previously working as a play-by-play announcer for Fox Sports and the Pac-12 Network as well as a sports anchor in various cities. Tobey took over for longtime broadcaster Bill Land, who retired due to health concerns. Tobey worked alongside Spurs legend Sean Elliott on the broadcasts.
While Cowherd’s commentary focused on Tobey’s cheating, it seems more likely that the Spurs fired him because he allegedly slept with a player’s relative. With the situation playing out on social media, the optics probably didn’t help, either.
Tobey’s final season broadcasting Spurs games was one to remember, as San Antonio advanced to the 2026 NBA Finals against the New York Knicks, where Victor Wembanyama and Co. eventually lost in five games.
With Tobey now out of a job, it remains to be seen what the next chapter of his career will look like. Perhaps Tobey will take Cowherd’s advice and hire a lawyer in an attempt to sue the Spurs for wrongful termination.
