The 2026 NBA playoffs are nearly here, and this year’s fight for the Larry O’Brien trophy promises a lot of excitement. While each matchup would provide something to the fans, some just carry more weight. These are the ones with the most riveting narratives, should they happen.

The 2026 NBA Playoff Matchups We Want to See
Boston Celtics vs. New York Knicks
The Celtics may have very well been on their way to a second straight NBA championship last year. However, those aspirations came to a screeching halt when they faced the Knicks in last year’s playoffs.
Despite trailing early in the series, the Celtics refused to fade quietly. Even after Celtics forward Jayson Tatum went down with an Achilles tear, his team did not back down.
Tatum’s injury brought up a lot of “what-ifs.” Could they have made a comeback to eliminate the Knicks? Could they have defeated the scorching-hot Indiana Pacers? Could they have accomplished a repeat?
This upcoming postseason will be a repeat of an already compelling matchup from last year, except this year’s could carry more weight should it happen.
Then, there’s the discussion of power balance in the Eastern Conference. Boston isn’t that far removed from its most recent title run. However, there are questions of whether they can go deep again despite major changes to their supporting cast.
As for the Knicks, they are one of the top teams in the East. However, there’s uncertainty whether they already have everything they need to be contenders, or if they’re still a piece or two away. The way a postseason clash between the two of them would go a long way to answering these lingering questions.
Kevin Durant’s Revenge: Houston Rockets vs. Phoenix Suns
Vengeance is sweet, and in the NBA, one of the sweetest forms of revenge is knocking out your former team in the playoffs.
The Suns and the Rockets were involved in a massive seven-team trade last summer. That deal sent Suns forward Kevin Durant from Phoenix to Houston, and Rockets forward Dillon Brooks and Rockets guard Jalen Green from Houston to Phoenix.
In this year’s postseason, these players can face off against their former squads, but it’ll be a tough battle for the Suns just to get there. First of all, they’ll need to claw their way out of the play-in tournament. Then, they need to survive at least the first round before they see the Rockets.
If they manage to get there, then the landscape shifts dramatically. Durant will face off against a team he seemingly had no intention of leaving until they included him in trade talks. While he nixed those discussions, everyone knew it was the beginning of the end of his time in Phoenix.
Sure, it’s already a form of revenge to see the team that wanted to trade you away struggle to even make it to the postseason. Still, it would be more satisfying for his fans to see him personally kick his former team out of the playoffs.
Then there’s Brooks, who is known as an instigator. He does not need any personal reasons to play the role of a villain, but there’s more depth to it if he does it against a former team. He previously said he was extra motivated to play against the Rockets. Now, imagine that type of motivation in the playoffs.
A clash between Durant and Brooks alone would make this one worth keeping an eye on, if their most recent battle was any indication. In fact, it seemed like all the players were getting extra physical with one another in that game.
A lot has to go right for the Suns for this matchup to happen. If they manage to get there, though, that alone is already reason enough for this to be a matchup worth paying attention to.
Los Angeles Lakers vs. Denver Nuggets: A Modern Rivalry
Fans everywhere love a matchup that has some history to it, and a clash between the Nuggets and the Lakers is one that carries plenty. In recent years, these two squads have had an intense postseason rivalry.
In 2020, the Lakers sent the Nuggets packing in the Western Conference Finals while they went on to win the title. In 2023, the Nuggets exacted their revenge by sweeping the Lakers in the same stage to win a title.
Then, in 2024, the Lakers were once again eliminated by the Nuggets in the very first round.
Regular-season games between these two teams are already highly anticipated affairs, so it’s only natural that a playoff battle between them is one to look forward to.
A matchup this season will also introduce new angles to their rivalry. Some of the attention will shift to the battle between two of the best European players in the league. Then there’s the thought that this might be the last time Lakers forward LeBron James suits up in the playoffs.
Of course, some of the reasons this particular matchup was exciting will persist, such as Nuggets guard Jamal Murray seemingly elevating his play when facing the Lakers.
San Antonio Spurs vs. Oklahoma City Thunder: Clash of the New Powerhouses
In terms of what the future holds for the Spurs, it seems they are trying to carve a path not all that different from the one the Thunder took in recent seasons. One key difference is that the Thunder are already NBA champs, while the Spurs have put themselves in a position to challenge them directly.
Fans already caught a glimpse of what a showdown between these two young powerhouses looks like. So far, it looks like the Spurs are the better team, winning four of their five meetings. However, those matchups were in the regular season. A clash in the playoffs would look and feel different than the ones they’ve already had.
Yes, the Spurs won their regular-season series, but the Thunder have already proven they have the mentality and the resilience to win when it truly counts.
Additionally, if these two teams were to face off, it would have to be in the Conference Finals. That would add another layer of tension and excitement, keeping hoops fans glued to every single minute of every game.
Detroit Pistons vs. San Antonio Spurs: A Finals Renaissance
Teams in the NBA rise and fall all the time, and what better Finals matchup would there be than two championship-winning franchises experiencing a renaissance? The Spurs and the Pistons have had their best regular seasons after several years as bottom-of-the-barrel teams.
The Spurs are ending a six-year playoff drought and have achieved their first 60-win season since 2016-17. Meanwhile, while the Pistons made the playoffs last year, their fans have been suffering through losing seasons for much longer. In fact, this season is the first time they have surpassed the 50-win mark since 2007-08.
There is also more history behind it if this matchup happens. The last time the Pistons made the Finals was in 2005, when they faced the Spurs. That was a back-and-forth matchup that went to seven games with the Spurs emerging victorious. It was one of the most exciting Finals matchups of a bygone era.
Now, Spurs center Victor Wembanyama and Pistons guard Cade Cunningham both look like they’ll be part of the new era of superstars that will define the NBA’s new generation. So, this hypothetical matchup would be an interesting way to look back at the league’s rich history while also giving a glimpse of what the future holds.
