LeBron James remains without a team three weeks into free agency. There have been speculations that he could make his decision this week, but he has yet to announce where he will play next after ending his eight-year stint with the Los Angeles Lakers last month.
Fans haven’t been the only ones waiting in suspense, as NBA Commissioner Adam Silver also wants the four-time MVP to end his free agency due to a pressing concern.
LeBron James’ Free Agency Draws Public Plea From NBA Commissioner Adam Silver
Appearing at CNBC Sports and Boardroom’s Game Plan at the Fanatics Fest on Thursday, Silver discussed multiple topics. Among the issues he addressed was the 41-year-old’s free agency.
The Athletic’s Mike Vornukov shared what the league commissioner said about James taking his time weighing his options.
“We have to finish up the schedule, and where LeBron plays affects the schedule… It will influence how we set the schedule – opening week, Christmas. So I need him to make a decision,” Vornukov tweeted.

CNBC Sports reporter Alex Sherman added that Silver wanted James’ decision to happen as soon as possible, as “media companies are getting antsy.”

Over the past three seasons, the NBA has revealed its opening and Christmas week schedules around August. For the 2025-26 campaign, the league dropped the key dates on Aug. 8.
During a live edition of the “Mind the Game” podcast at the Fanatics Fest, the Javits Convention Center crowd buzzed with excitement at potentially hearing James make an announcement.
Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton, a special guest of the show, tried to pry the information from the 22-time NBA All-Star, but James wouldn’t budge. Still, the former Laker seems intent on ending the suspense sooner.
The four-time NBA Finals MVP told the captivated audience that he “won’t hold you guys up too much longer.”
Early this month, James’ agent Rich Paul said on the “Game Over” podcast that they are considering 10 teams that could land the do-it-all forward. Among those teams, the Miami Heat, the Cleveland Cavaliers, and the Philadelphia 76ers are reportedly the frontrunners.

However, a few NBA insiders see the Minnesota Timberwolves, also on Paul’s list, as a strong contender to sign James.
Silver likely wants to release the 2026-27 schedule around August, as he has done over the past few seasons. That leaves James with roughly two or three weeks before he announces where he will take his talents next.
