NBA Champion Urges Lakers to Make Major Changes, Warns Against Building Around Luka Dončić, Austin Reaves

NBA champion Kendrick Perkins warns Lakers against building around Luka Dončić and Austin Reaves after OKC loss.

The Los Angeles Lakers saw their strong run hit a harsh reality check after a heavy loss to the Oklahoma City Thunder on April 1. Despite going 13-1 in their last 14 games prior to their OKC matchup, the Lakers were blown out 139-96 on the road.

The 43-point defeat not only snapped momentum but also raised serious questions about the Lakers’ playoff ceiling.

Kendrick Perkins Questions Lakers’ Playoff Competency After Heavy Loss to Thunder

The loss at Paycom Center quickly sparked strong reactions. Former NBA champion Kendrick Perkins, speaking on First Take, did not hold back sharing his take on how far Lakers can go in the coming playoffs..

“When I look at the Lakers, they’re a 2nd round exit, that’s their ceiling… The Lakers don’t scare a soul. Even on Halloween… Last night showed me if you’re the Lakers, you cannot invest all your money into Austin Reaves and Luka Dončić as your two franchise guys going forward if you’re expecting to win a championship,” Perkins said.

The timing of that warning made it even more serious. Luka Dončić, Lakers’ primary offensive weapon is now set to miss the rest of the regular season with a Grade 2 left hamstring injury. The update came after an MRI following the Lakers loss to OKC, dealing a huge blow to the Lakers.

Dončić’s absence leaves a major gap. He has been producing 33.5 points per game, and there is no clear replacement on the roster who can match that level of scoring and playmaking. LeBron James can still deliver big nights, and Austin Reaves has stepped up as a scorer, but the offense clearly looks weak without Dončić running it.

Before this setback, the Lakers looked like a serious contender. With a 50-26 record and the third seed in the West, their offense was among the top 5 in the league. A healthy trio of Dončić, James, and Reaves gave them a strong chance to reach the Western Conference Finals. But the loss against the OKC showed the other side.

The Thunder dominated every part of the game. They shot 53.9% from the field and made 19 three-pointers. They also scored 64 points in the paint, compared to the Lakers’ 50. OKC’s efficiency stood out even more, with 1.33 points per possession against the Lakers’ 0.95.

More importantly, the game exposed key weaknesses that could hurt the Lakers in the playoffs. Without Dončić, the offense became slow and predictable. Ball movement dropped, spacing suffered, and the team struggled to create good shots. The bench failed to provide support, and the defense could not keep up, especially as Oklahoma City kept attacking in transition.

The Lakers also struggled with turnovers, shedding 24 points on 18 of them. They missed open looks, and were beaten on the boards with OKC outdoing them 50/38 in total rebounds. Their defense shattered, showing how easily a strong team like Oklahoma City could break them down.

This is where Perkins’ point gains weight. Building around Dončić and Reaves may produce strong regular-season results, but against elite teams, the current setup shows clear limits.

If Dončić were healthy, the Lakers could still aim for a deep playoff run. Without him, even getting past the second round now looks uncertain. And even with him, matchups against top defensive teams like Oklahoma City could still stop them short.
