NBA Announces Major Decision On Referee Eric Lewis After Investigation

While disgraced NBA referee Eric Lewis walked away two years ago, find out the shocking development in his status here

Officiating will always be a trending topic in NBA circles due to the nature of the game. Referees often face constant scrutiny from both players and fans. Top league referee Eric Lewis seemingly had had enough two years ago, leading to his retirement.

The NBA has launched an investigation into Lewis, and the latest development may come as a shock to people.

What Did The NBA Announce Regarding The Status Of Eric Lewis?

An official press release from the NBA Communications’ social media account revealed that Lewis has been reinstated to the league’s officiating program. The league office said, “Eric Lewis has been reinstated to the league’s officiating program. He will begin officiating games at this weekend’s NBA G League Winter Showcase.”

The league added, “As part of a jointly agreed-upon path to a potential return, Lewis fully participated in an investigation into his social media activities during his time as an NBA official. In order to be eligible to rejoin the program, Lewis cleared several benchmarks, including stress management counseling and training on responsible use of social media.”

A final note on Lewis was shared by Byron Spruell, the NBA’s President of League Operations. Spruell said, “While he made a mistake in engaging in social media, our investigation concluded that his behavior did not impact his ability to officiate games fully and with integrity.”

Lewis served as an NBA referee for nearly two decades before retiring two years ago while he was being investigated for unauthorized social media activity. The NBA investigated whether Lewis was using a secret account on X to respond to criticism directed at him. NBA rules prohibit referees from publicly commenting on performance-related issues without prior approval from the league.

The NBA believed Lewis was active behind a burner account because the username @BlairCuttliff was connected to his wife, while the account only followed other specific accounts, including NBA-related pages and his wife’s alma mater.

Before Lewis retired, he established himself as one of the league’s top officials, earning the honor to officiate multiple NBA Finals games. Now, Lewis will have the opportunity to start rebuilding his reputation at the G League Winter Showcase.

The Tournament features eight teams competing in a single-elimination competition. The winning team leaves the Winter Showcase with a $100,000 prize. There will also be over 20 non-tournament games taking place at the tournament sites: The Hyatt Regency Orlando and the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Florida.

For Lewis, it’s an opportunity to start his climb back to working NBA games again.
