Golden State Warriors guard Moses Moody suffered a devastating knee injury during Monday night’s overtime win against the Dallas Mavericks, and the diagnosis has confirmed the worst fears for the franchise.
Moses Moody’s Knee Injury Diagnosis and Recovery Timeline
ESPN’s Shams Charania reported on Tuesday that Moody has been diagnosed with a torn patellar tendon in his left knee. The injury will require surgery and end what had been the best season of his young career. Recovery timelines for this type of injury typically range from six to 12 months, meaning Moody could miss the start of the 2026-27 season as well.

The injury occurred with about a minute remaining in overtime of the Warriors’ 137-131 victory over Dallas. Moody stole the ball from Mavericks rookie Cooper Flagg and raced up the court on a fast break. As he planted his left foot to elevate for what appeared to be a wide-open dunk, his knee buckled without any contact from another player.
Moody immediately fell to the hardwood and grabbed at his knee in obvious pain. He remained on the floor for several minutes as medical staff attended to him before he was carted off the court on a stretcher. Players from both teams looked on in stunned silence as the 23-year-old was wheeled to the locker room.
The injury’s visual was disturbing, with replays showing Moody’s kneecap displaced from its normal position. Sports medicine physician Brian Sutterer analyzed the footage and noted that the patella appeared to move upward on the thigh, which is characteristic of a patellar tendon rupture rather than a dislocation.
Draymond Green was visibly emotional on the court and embraced Moody before he was taken off the floor. Head coach Steve Kerr and teammate Gary Payton II later spoke about the impact Moody has had on the team and how difficult it was to see him go down in such fashion. Stephen Curry was shown on the broadcast with his head in his hands after watching his teammate suffer the injury.
The timing of the injury makes it even more painful for Moody and the Warriors. The fifth-year guard had just returned from a wrist injury that sidelined him for approximately three weeks. Monday’s game against Dallas was his first action since the wrist issue, and he appeared to be in excellent form before the knee gave out.
Moody was enjoying career-best numbers across the board this season. He averaged 11.9 points and 3.3 rebounds per game while shooting 40.2% from beyond the arc. He also set a new career high with 32 points earlier in the season and had become one of the team’s most reliable contributors off the bench.
Moody will undergo surgery to repair the torn patellar tendon, and the focus will then shift to rehabilitation. The Warriors will provide additional updates as more information becomes available regarding his recovery timeline and prognosis for next season.
