‘Take It Easy’ — Legendary Broadcaster Reveals Private Conversation Where Michael Jordan Defended LeBron James

NBA broadcaster Mike Wilbon shed light on a private conversation with Michael Jordan about LeBron James back in the day.

The LeBron James vs. Michael Jordan GOAT debate has been the defining argument in basketball for over a decade.

ESPN’s Mike Wilbon, one of the biggest broadcasters in the history of the game, had personal access to both players and appeared on First Take recently to set the record straight once and for all.

What he revealed says a lot more about Michael Jordan than most people would expect.

Mike Wilbon Sheds Light On Michael Jordan Conversation About LeBron James

“Early in LeBron’s career, I remember when, you know, there was some criticism in the playoffs when LeBron did not, it took LeBron seven years like it took Michael. And there were tough criticisms made of LeBron James. Remember, he took the jersey off when he was walking out of Boston that final time when he lost to the Celtics. And I remember having a conversation with Michael, who said, ‘hey, take it easy. When you talk about this tomorrow, take it easy on this kid, and here’s why,'” he said.

“And Michael had a list of reasons, of things that he really liked about LeBron James. He didn’t have to do that, but he understood what was going to go on publicly, because he’d been on the other end of that early in his career,” Wilbon elaborated further.

“People don’t remember this. When folks get old, the scoring champion can never win. A guy who shoots, right, couldn’t beat Detroit three times. Lost to the Pistons in a row, by the way, in the playoffs. So Michael understood that. Talk about despair in the playoffs. And so he wanted to soften that blow for LeBron James, who was coming up later. So if people think that Jordan has somehow resented LeBron, they’re wrong,” Wilbon said.

The context behind this is important. The moment Wilbon is referencing is the 2010 Eastern Conference Semifinals, when James and the Cleveland Cavaliers were knocked out by the Boston Celtics in six games.

James left the floor that night without shaking hands, removed his jersey while still on the court, and walked directly to the locker room. The backlash was immediate and brutal. That image became one of the biggest criticisms of James’ early career, a piece of evidence people used to question his character and competitiveness before he had won anything.

What Wilbon is describing is Jordan, privately, stepping in before the next day’s coverage and telling one of the most prominent voices in sports media to hold back on the backlash. Jordan had no obligation to do that, but the gesture carries real weight.

The timing of Wilbon’s comments is also worth noting. James, now 41 and in his 23rd season, is currently in the middle of a first-round playoff series against the Houston Rockets, leading a depleted Lakers roster without Luka Dončić or Austin Reaves.

The GOAT conversation has been reignited again, and Wilbon’s comments come as a reminder that James has had a silent admirer in Jordan all this while.
