Mavericks Could Shockingly Cut Ties With 2 Key Stars After Nico Harrison Firing: NBA Insider

The Dallas Mavericks are dealing with turmoil, but a new report from an NBA insider suggests the organization may know what to do next.

The Dallas Mavericks face an uncertain future. They are currently 14th in the Western Conference standings with a 3-9 record. Meanwhile, the organization’s former franchise player, Luka Doncic, is off to an MVP-level start this season with the Los Angeles Lakers.

That seemingly led to the man who decided it was best to trade Doncic, Nico Harrison, getting dismissed from his role as Mavs GM. Despite the uncertainty surrounding the organization, a new report reveals the Mavs may have clarity on what to do next.

NBA Insider Reveals the Mavericks’ Future Decisions

NBA insider Ashish Mathur reports that two of the team’s most notable stars are on the trade block. Mathur said, “The Dallas Mavericks are widely expected to trade Anthony Davis and Klay Thompson.” Mathur added, “The Mavericks will likely work with the camps of Davis and Thompson to find logical/desired landing spots for the future Hall of Famers.”

It’s a shocking development for the organization, as Harrison had believed that acquiring Davis would give the Mavericks a two- or three-year window for a championship. Instead, the organization appears to be embracing the thought of a rebuild just two years after winning a Western Conference championship and going to the NBA Finals.

Davis is averaging 20.8 points and 10.2 rebounds per game this season. However, the issue is his availability, which is something many Mavs fans were worried about when the Doncic for Davis and others trade happened this past February.

Davis has only played in five games this season and is currently out with a left calf strain. He suffered a left adductor strain in his Mavs debut last season that caused him to miss over a month during the team’s playoff push. He’s only played in 16 games since arriving in Dallas, including last season’s Play-In Tournament.

While Davis can use injuries as an excuse for his struggles, Thompson just hasn’t played well. He’s averaging 8.5 points per game this season on 32 percent shooting from the field and 28.9% shooting from three. He isn’t providing the defense to offset his shooting slump, which is why Mavs Head Coach Jason Kidd has moved him to a reserve role. Thompson simply hasn’t been the same player since tearing his left ACL in the 2019 Finals.

If the Mavs opt to rebuild around this year’s first overall pick, Cooper Flagg, there will be more changes. The future of nine-time All-Star Kyrie Irving is intriguing. He’s recovering from a torn ACL, but the idea of playing for a rebuilding team once he’s cleared probably isn’t the ideal situation.

What about PJ Washington? He’s only 27, but Harrison signed him to a four-year, $90 million extension before the season. Could the Mavericks put him on the trade block once they move their older veterans?

And if Jason Kidd isn’t interested in coaching a rebuilding team, could other franchises, like the Knicks once did, try to poach him? One thing’s clear: there are plenty of tough questions ahead for the Mavericks.
