What Is Marcus Smart’s Injury and Return Timeline?

Marcus Smart is currently dealing with a right ankle contusion, an injury that has kept him out of five consecutive games. He last appeared in a Lakers uniform on March 21 against the Orlando Magic.

While head coach JJ Redick has described the injury as non-serious and maintained a day-to-day designation, Smart has not been cleared to play in Thursday’s game against the Oklahoma City Thunder, extending his absence.

Redick has been transparent about his reasoning: with the NBA playoffs just around the corner, the Lakers are not willing to rush Smart back until he is completely healthy. The risk-reward calculation is straightforward. Losing him to a more serious setback in the final stretch of the regular season would be far more damaging than sitting him out for a handful of games now.

Beyond the ankle, Smart is also managing hip issues, adding another layer of caution to his recovery timeline.

What Smart’s Absence Means for Lakers vs. Thunder

The timing could hardly be worse. The Oklahoma City Thunder are not just any opponent; they are the defending champions and have held the NBA’s best record for most of the 2025-26 season. Facing them without your best perimeter defender is a meaningful disadvantage.

Smart, 32, is a former Defensive Player of the Year and three-time All-Defensive selection. He is averaging 9.5 points, 2.8 rebounds, 2.8 assists, and 1.4 steals across 60 appearances this season, but his raw numbers only tell part of the story.

It is his on-ball defensive intensity, contesting without fouling and staying relentlessly active on the perimeter, that makes him difficult to replace in this rotation.

In his absence, Jake LaRavia has stepped into the starting lineup and produced 14 points, 7 rebounds, and 2 3-pointers in 38 minutes during his last outing (against Cleveland).

Bronny James has also absorbed added minutes off the bench. Both players offer energy, but neither replicates what Smart brings on defense.

With six games remaining in the regular season, the Lakers are carefully balancing staying sharp now with arriving at the playoffs fully equipped. Smart’s return timeline remains uncertain, but the organizational priority is clear: get him healthy before the postseason begins.
